Dad!jacob going to his first event on the red carpet for a movie premier and it’s the first event he’s been to after having his newborn daughter and all of his interview questions are about him adapting to fatherhood and he’s very sweet about it, but he really just wants to go back home to reader and their baby girl :3
Jacob really didn't want to leave tonight and you could see it Like, he was stalling and really struggling getting out the door. This was his first event since becoming a father and usually you went with him to these swanky star studded galas and red carpets but since you were breastfeeding, you couldn't leave your daughter for 3+ hours and you didn't feel right her first outing being a red carpet event so you chose to stay back tonight and Jacob really was trying to make every excuse to stay.
You watched him nervously putting his suit together in the bathroom as you swayed your newborn daughter Ruby, trying to keep her calm as she wound down for the night. "Roo wanted to say 'good luck tonight daddy!'" You said as you came up and the baby squeaked as you handed the baby over to him, hoping she wouldn't choose that moment to spit up all over his fancy suit. Jacob looked closet to tears as he hugged Ruby close. She was already half asleep.
"Are you sure you want me to go tonight?" He fretted, clearly wanting you to ask him to stay home and get endless baby snuggles with your brand new daughter. "I really could wait a little longer... I mean she's so little... what if she doesn't go down! What if she can tell I'm gone! What if she misses me!"
You hardened your expression and rubbed your anxious husbands upper back. "Jake, breathe please. I know you're anxious. But you're going to have a good time." Jacob groaned, tilting his head to the ceiling, whining in petulance. "No I won't! I want to be here with my girls!" You smiled and cupped his scruffy cheek; settling into new dad life meant putting shaving on the back burner but hey, you weren't exactly complaining and neither was little Ruby. "Jacob, you know this red carpet is important. Ruby is going to be just fine. Her belly is full, she's content and she's about to fall asleep on you as we speak. She'll be good with me. And you'll have your phone on you so I can text you pictures every half hour if you want." Jacob relaxed, dropping his shoulders but gripped Ruby a bit tighter like he was considering fighting giving her up when it was time to actually leave. "W-what if I miss something?" He pouted. "Pictures every half hour and I'll text you every micro-expression in quick succession if you want okay? It'll be what, 3 hours max? You'll be home before she even knows you're gone. And you can get a snuggle as soon as you get in the door." You pulled the baby from his arms gently. "Ugh, Fine!"
Jacob knew this song and dance. Smile, pose, be a bit cheeky. But he just wasn't used to doing these events alone anymore. And to tell you the truth, he felt like he was missing a limb since you or Ruby weren't here with him. But he told himself he just had to dive back into the red carpet world. He was good at it he reminded himself as he walked to the first reporter waving to get his attention.
"Jacob! I didn't think we'd see you back so soon since you're a new dad!" He nodded. "Yeah, yeah, this is my first event back so I'm taking it slow but I definitely miss my girls."
"How is it, new parenthood is it everything you hoped it would be? How's your wife doing?" The chipper interviewer asked. Jacob's eyes lit up as he realized the whole night he could brag about you and Ruby. "It's... wonderful. It's magical. I mean, I'm tired, it's messy at times but I feel like I was born to do this. This is my new purpose. My wife is an absolute superhero though. She's the one staying back tonight with the baby. She's so..." He's suddenly tearing up. "She's incredible... yeah, yeah I could go on and on..." He says nodding fondly.
"I'm so glad. Is there anything you can tell us? Any new milestones?" Jacob made a quizzical face as he searched his memory for the answer. "Her name is Ruby, Roo as we call her. She's only three months so she's still learning to be a baby really but... she uh.. she smiled at me on a walk the other day and I had to refrain from shouting and telling everyone what just happened, it was great."
"Were you making a funny face or..?"
"No, no, well I was walking looking ahead as I pushed the pram so from her angle she probably saw a double chin or something. I hope she thinks I'm the funniest person in the world though. Time will tell." The interviewer laughed and Jacob smiled genuinely for the first time all night.
He wanted to show her off. Show everyone photos like all new dads do but he knew you and him had agreed on strict boundaries about her privacy and showing her face to the world so settled on telling stories about her to anyone who would listen.
"Jacob!" Another reporter yelled. "You're back! How's the baby girl!" Jacob smiled. "I am back yeah, I definitely miss my girl tonight but she's doing good. She's hopefully asleep right now, not giving my wife too much trouble."
"Can you tell who she looks like yet? You or your wife?"
"A potato!" He fully joked.
"She does not!" The interviewer gasped.
"No, no. I mean... she's still so little so it's hard to see who she'll look like. It all depends on the day and the expression she's making I think. My wife thinks she looks more like me and I think she's my wife's twin so... I don't know, yeah, it definitely depends."
After another dozen interviews the night was over and Jacob was so ready to be back with his little family. As soon as he was in the door, he took his shoes and suit jacket off and found you on the couch. "Hey, is Roo still sleeping?" He asked, kissing your hair. Just then the baby monitor chirped as the baby woke up hungry. "Nope!" You exclaimed, popping the p. "You wanna go get her? She needs to eat." Jacob's entire face lit up as he jogged down the hall to the bedroom, picking the baby up out of the bedside bassinet. "Hi sweet girl! Hi! Oooh I missed you.. But I told everybody all about you.." He cooed but the baby wasn't satisfied with his stories of his night, hello, she was starving! "Okay. Are you hungry? Yeah? Let's go see mama." The bounced her gently as he took her back to you, vowing to get all the cuddles once she was fed again.
This has been sitting in my Inbox for MONTHS but I was finally ready to write something again and I saw my other Jacob stories have been popular so.. I hope this one was okay! It's funny and cute and I'm proud of it <3 And since he's going to be doing press for Dog Stars soon, hopefully that will keep me inspired!
