FOR FUCKS SAKE EVEN IF I TRY TO BE SPECIFIC THE FIRST POST HAS TO BE SOME BULLSHIT AAAAAAAH.
it’s not all bad...right?
Dear DnD,
I am sure you’ve probably seen/read all the complaints about Episode 1………………and here’s one more!
I mean, I know you’ve got only SIX episodes to work with, and there’s so much you wanted to get done, and you’ve no longer got source material to work with, and you’re pretty much writing from the seat of your pants, passing it onto GRR Martin, and hoping that ‘mmmm’ sound he makes is actually him agreeing with you and not wanting to gouge his eyes out. Either way, you’re doing the best you can, and you want to produce something really awesome but…*sigh* where does one begin?
Trust me, I’m not a screenwriter or some hot shot writer, but even a layman can squint at the screen and wonder about a few things.
First off, great intro with the whole parade into Winterfell mirroring the first episode of GOT, and that was a nice call back. Tension good…of course we didn’t expect our heroes to arrive to a ticker tape parade, so I’ll give you that.
However, the problem comes with Bran’s sudden “hold up, folks! This ain’t the time to be all dramatic. We’ve got the Night King on our asses! So, get busy!”
Great! Let’s get busy then!
Oh no, wait…let’s have Dany and Jon go out on a joyride AFTER she’s just heard the devastating news about her baby now becoming the Night King’s WOMD. Her baby just brought down the wall. Her baby is on the war rampage with an asshole, and what’s a mother to do? Meh…go worry about her other dragons (yes, believable and understandable), but the riding part with Jon….as fun as that was, was NOT the right time!
That scene could have been done in two ways: One, BEFORE they arrived at Winterfell. Again, I know there are time constraints, but that scene could have been done with a brief shot of tents on the ground via the army taking a rest on their march to Winterfell, and then the Dothraki come up to Jon and Dany and etc. etc.
Or two, if they must do the joyride after Bran’s revelation, then there should have been a moment when Dany breaks down – probably while flying – as the enormity of the situation sinks in. Her baby is being used by their enemy and the thought of killing him all over again weighs upon her. Jon takes the opportunity to comfort her while she sobs against his chest before cupping her chin, kissing the tears again and then kissing her for real. And yes, even Drogon and Rhaegal staring them down afterward would be a nice comedic touch at the end of an emotional moment.
Problem #2: Ghost.
Again, I know there are budget restraints and our little wolf-doggo is going to be an abstract until further notice. However, we have to remember that Ghost is to Jon what Drogon is to Dany! Ghost is Jon’s second half, and even if we can’t see him in person, make his presence felt. This could have happened in a couple of ways;
1. Jon asking about him – maybe to Arya during their godswood talk.
2. During the march to Winterfell, Jon spots tracks on the ground and mentions that he senses Ghost around and perhaps wishes his ride-or-die won’t remain hidden and would come say ‘hi’ to them.
3. Or even when they’re back in Winterfell, in some bitty conversation Jon mentions that he heard Ghost’s howl or saw his tracks or Dany mentions how Jon showed them to her and how she trembled at the sound of the wolves howling or something…anything to show that Ghost is indeed around and Jon hasn’t forgotten him.
Problem #3: Littlefinger.
Same as above pretty much. I’m sure time has passed since their arrival to Winterfell and yet Jon never took a moment to find out what happened to the bane of his existence? Did he just assume that Littlefinger went back to The Eyrie or something? Or…?
(again, let’s perhaps give DnD the benefit of the doubt and assume all those scenes were shot and thanks to editing, those precious scenes will continue to remain on the cutting room floor…right?)
Problem #4: Bronn and Tits
I think about 80% of the fandom (and maybe general public) might have done without seeing that mess. We get it. GOT has always had the tits and asses for the fanservice, but since you’re set for time and shouldn’t waste precious minutes on frivolous nonsense, would it kill you to have had a scene of just Bronn slipping into his boots, a quick shot of tittering girls running out of the room just before Qyburn walks in? I think it sends more than a clear message what Bronn was up to without the extra jiggling and grinding. I mean I was rolling my eyes so hard, it nearly got lost in the ol’ skull.
Problem #5: The Meeting with the North
Can the Night King just come now and roast them all? Please? I’m begging? I mean I get it. You want the tension and the drama, but there comes a point when some need for drama gets utterly ridiculous. I was especially surprised at Lyanna Mormont’s reaction. For a girl who seemed to have the most sense out of all those crusty old men the last time Jon convinced them about going to get help, her argument of him no longer being ‘king’ over the armies brought in to help them win is ludicrous! She’s supposed to be the smart one, the one who should have told everyone to shut up and let Jon speak (or hell even Dany) so they can truly understand the situation. But alas, for the sake of ‘drama’, we had to watch that whole thing play out.
Do not even get me started on Sansa.
Yes, Winterfell might be ‘your house’, and you might think you’re better than everyone else in the brains department at this point, but being a Lady of a House also involves you being a good listener and willing to think beyond a narrowed point of view, especially when you know how fickle your fellow Northerners are. But…I’ll chuck it all to character flaws and move on.
(p.s: I will give her points for calling out Tyrion on his BS. Yes, even we all had to do an eye roll for his gullibility)
Arya? Was a bit baffling for me as well. Again, I don’t expect her to really go all gung-ho at first, but that part about doubting Jon’s motives and assuming he wasn’t thinking of their family just seemed ‘out-of-character’. And for a girl who supposedly is in love with the Targaryens and their history, I should have seen a little more enthusiasm when it came to Dany and her reasons for Jon trusting her. Again, I don’t expect her to be all kumbaya and skipping with Dany through the godswood, but that veiled threat to Jon was a big ‘wtf?’ moment from me.
(p.s: isn’t she supposed to be more attuned and understanding to Jon anyway?)
Problem #6: Dany
The writing for her is atrocious. Is she doomed to remain silent while she’s eviscerated only to have to do something ‘spectacular’ for everyone to go ‘ooooh! She is awesome!’ before they no longer keep chucking her into the ‘her-family-is-looney’ bin? I could get into a whole long debate about it, but again, this is the route DnD seem determined to pursue, soooo…*sigh*
Only SIX episodes folks.
Problem #7: The Reveal
I could write a whole essay about this, but I’m already getting longwinded. In short, it could have been done better. Not even with a whole production of Bran being in the picture, but Sam’s entitled little rant there about Dany not deserving it just because he and Bran did some research. Urgh. I was just so-so-so pissed at that scene especially his question to Jon at the end there. “Would she give up her crown for you or her people…” I forget the exact quote. But after all you’ve heard about Dany’s exploits in Essos, all the stories you’ve heard from Aemon, and seeing the armies and dragons she arrived to Winterfell with, you STILL question her decisions just because she roasted a father who treated you like shit (and yes, I’m sorry your brother got fried too, but it was his choice!)? I think Jon should have punched him there…just to let out some frustration at least.
Anyway, enough of all this. It’s just one episode and my hope is that episode two will expand on some of the issues mentioned above. Not holding my breath, but...we continue to keep hope alive, DnD!
It’s the final stretch and we’re all rooting for you. Hear that? That’s the grating sound of all GOT fans seriously begging/rooting for you. Don’t fail us anymore now!
P.S: Where was Brienne and Podrick anyway?? I was sure they were at Winterfell or did I just miss them? Or wait…well with Jaime now in the picture, we’ll definitely see her magically show up in episode two.
(and if Jaime doesn’t give her a hug or something...I’m rioting!)
Day 3! Whoop!! Not much happened today, I only had two classes (Spanish at 8:30 this morning and English at 3:30) so I pretty much worked my job all day. I realized at about 1 today that the only thing I've eaten in the past 24+ hours was grapes and ritz chips and like 5 ravioli 😅😅😅 by the time I finished work I didn't have time to eat before English so thankfully it was a short class, and now here I am in one of the dining courts trying to start/get ahead on the handmaids tale even though we aren't supposed to start until next week but 🤷🏻♀️ What I'm listening to: Exchange - Bryson Tiller
