klancemas week one: hot chocolate 🍫☕ | christmas tree 🎄

“Ok, mullet,” Lance says, surveying the kitchen with grim determination. “We’re tasked to make hot chocolate for movie night tonight, since Hunk’s out shopping, but we’ve been given very clear instructions to leave this kitchen as spotless as we found it.”

Keith crosses his arms. “I’m always good at following directions.” Ignoring Lance’s snort of disbelief, he wanders to the refrigarator and looks at the sheet of paper stuck with a magnet.

“Why are Hunk’s hot chocolate recipes so long? Aren’t you just supposed to put chocolate powder in hot water?”

Lance turns around slowly.

“You’re insane.” He says flatly. “Come on, get the cups out. I’ll get the hot chocolate powder.” With a smirk, he adds, “It’s on the higher shelf anyway.”

Keith bristles, just like Lance knew he would. “Why you- I’m two inches shorter than you.”

“Still two inches,” Lance sings opening the pantry door. He surveys the pantry, but unceremoniously gets tackled. He oomphs, scrambling up behind Keith, who’s hurriedly scanning the shelves.

“Nope, no way, nuh-uh, no,” Lance says indignantly, shoving his way besides Keith. They both lock eyes on the box at the same time, and jump over each other in an attempt to get to it first.

“No you don’t- ow, watch it, that was my ear-”

“Move over, your pointy elbow’s in my gut-”

“My pointy elbow? Yours are like toothpicks!”

“This coming from you?”

Lance sees the bag of flour falling in slow motion, but before he can do anything, it falls to the ground with a dense thud and flour explodes in Hunk’s neatly organized pantry.

There’s a grim silence of oh shit, we’re going to die.

“Hunk is going to murder us,” Keith says faintly. “I’m going to die.”

“If you hadn’t tackled me-”

“You called me short!”

“You are!”

Lance receives a face full of flour for that response. Keith’s eyes are wide, but there’s a small smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

“Okay,” Lance says slowly. “So that’s how it’s gonna be, huh?” He scoops up a fist of flour and aims. Keith ducks and escapes into the kitchen. Lance follows with two fists of flour, but gets flour thrown at his back.

They’re having a full war now, throwing flour everywhere and each other, laughing and teasing, and  that’s why they don’t notice Hunk walk in, but they do feel the murderous glare. Hunk’s eye is twitching.

“I very specifically told you not to dirty my kitchen, to leave it in the exact condition you found it in, and this is what you do?” He berates. “Guys, it’s hot chocolate! How’d you mess it up!”

He shakes his head, sighing. “Go get changed and join the others in the living room. After I’m done making the hot chocolate, you can come back and clean this up.”

“Sorry Hunk,” Keith mutters, sliding past him.

“Sorry, Hunk,” Lance apologizes, gently bumping his shoulder.

As soon as they’re out of the kitchen, though, they catch the other’s eye and start laughing.

“You have flour in your hair,” Lance wheezes. “It looks like snow.” Keith brushes some out, leaving a vast majority behind. Lance rolls his eyes.

“No, dummy- here, let me.” He steps closer to Keith, carefully running his hands through the (unfairly) soft mullet. Dusting it off, he smiles satisfactorily. “See? All gone.”

It’s then he realizes just how close he is to Keith’s face. He laughs awkwardly, looking away from those eyes.

“OK! Well, I’ll see you in a few.”

“Uh huh,” Keith says, blinking. He looks like a cat, and Lance smiles as he turns away.

They may not have made hot chocolate, but he got to see Keith’s smile, hear Keith’s laugh, and Lance thinks that’s perfectly worth it.
