I’m on my 3rd or 4th rewatch of the TVDU (minus Legacies lol). Idk if it’s because my frontal lobe is now fully developed but Elijah now hits… different during this rewatch. I loveeeee him in S2 of TVD like his entrance and who he is in that season. Made me excited for the Original family again and then when I reached it I was kinda disappointed with how their storyline played out. Also how they kinda slowly character assassinated him after S2 lol. I started getting annoyed with him in later seasons of TO.
Interesting! I haven’t made a little post about them in a while so why not!
My frontal lobe only been developed a few weeks now so I haven’t rewatched in full yet with my adult-brain but yeah I remember liking season 2 Elijah a lot initially too. I believe that Elijah/Daniel was supposed to be the face of the Original family if you get my drift. Since Elijah was introduced first, and trying to kill Klaus. The dynamic seemed different (at first) than Defan. It did not appear that there as any forgiveness in the dynamic and that Elijah would be the co-signer in the end. The Salvatores are toxic and has done heinous shit but when Stefan had the chance to let Damon die with the tomb vampires he couldn’t do it. Elijah eventually did the same with Klaus and then season 3 of TVD kinda pushed Elijah to the back while Klaus took the forefront. Daniel has less TVD eps, than Joseph does.
I think in and out the narrative it has lots to do with how Klaus shot up in the fans eyes. I’ve seen old panel vids from 11’ or 12’ back then and you could see how annoyed Daniel would get when everyone would reflect all their attention to just Joseph which maybe impacted the writing there. The writers paid attention to their audience and this is where Elijah’s regression comes from. The writers saw how people loved the back and forth the Salvatore brothers.. then mimicked it up for the Mikaelsons. Problem with this is well???? The Mikaelsons have more than one sibling. The co-dependent toxicity vibe has many issues but it’s different when its two Salvatore’s vs. a large family lmao.
My opinion with the Original family as a whole is that the writers never cared about anybody but the big three (Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah..) the are the main attraction and how those writers write those other characters (Kol, Finn, Freya, Marcel etc) is just based on plot needs not because they wanted their stories told. I think TVD wise it was easier to add more to their family to rival with the Mystic Falls Gang. But, in TO the writers use didn’t want to write all of them lol. Kol was brought back for absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Finn brought back and died. Claire is why Rebekah is in anf out the plot and despite Freya always being there and busting her ass? Well, she doesn’t get any personal life until the very end.. if you asked me it’s because the writers took what Kat Graham was pitching for her character…
Back to Elijah he starts off very anti-Klaus, that was their history since Klaus kept being Klaus but then when Elijah is criticizing and blaming Klaus for shit… he’s often the main one campaigning behind him. But couldn’t keep up with the lore they created. Rebekah says here it was HER that did all the support and love… Klaus and Rebekahs dynamic is another topic for later but Elijah willingly treated his family just the same as Klaus but gets away with it in a sense lol. Elijah would see how Klaus treats Rebekah’s (dont get me wrong Klaus is wrong) and never do anything about it. He’d see how Klaus bossed and berated Freya and never did anything about it… I could go on but you get me
And on to Haylijah? I think still trying to mimic Defan is why that entire relationship happened..
