This prey is different.

He’s had the scared ones, ones who beg for their life, ones who try to make deals with him, ones who threaten him -- the brave ones, the ones who go down fighting, ones who give up without a word. He’s had them all.

This one fascinates him. 

This one has fight, this one has fire. This one reminds him of himself. This one will not be so easy to kill. This one sends a shiver down his spine. 

He’s going to have fun.

Years of practice both in the metaphorical and literal sense have afforded him an intimate knowledge of the human anatomy and sometimes he wonders if he could do this in his sleep. It’s all basic -- how much force to apply and where to get the best result.

He usually starts with fingers first. They’re easy, quick, and they make a point -- by the time he finishes with one hand, the prey usually either gives up or fights harder. They curse at him, spit at him, make empty promises of violence. 

He approaches the prey. He ignores the way they watch him, the way they tense when he picks up their hand. They have pretty hands, he notes. What a shame.

“It’s going to be okay,” he says, keeping his tone light. He’s a liar, and they’re not stupid enough to believe him. But he does it anyway. “Let’s start with the pinky, yeah?”
