Which control panel for my hosting, VPS or Dedicated should I choose?
The most common answers will be cPanel, Plesk or Directadmin and they all have their merits and drawbacks. Straight away we can say for the new user that we have always found Plesk to be the most sensible but once you are used to how things work, it can become cumbersome for some tasks compared to cPanel or Directadmin.
Is in our opinion fairly straight forward to use, we have always liked the interface and functionality and it has been quite stable, reliable and secure.
Directadmin is almost a hybrid between Plesk and cPanel but one thing we and our customers have always found cumbersome is the distinction between the Administrator, Reseller and User. It can make things downright confusing to find which account belongs where and also to create accounts. If you can get over the above then it could be for you.
Directadmin is lightweight, fast, secure and straight forward to use aside from the caveat above. It is also one of the most affordable options.
It has always been the defacto standard is probably the most popular one around the world. cPanel has had security issues in the past and is still a target but they have greatly improved. It is also very powerful, effective and works quite well for both novices and advanced users.
What does compevo recommend?
Strangely enough we actually recommend not to have a control panel unless you need one (however 99% of people will need and want one). Our in-house and customer self-made solutions have proven to be more reliable, more secure, more stable and most importantly have hardly any footprint or overhead compared to control panels, especially cPanel and Plesk which take up more RAM than many standard VPS packages offer.
Barring that we w9uld recommend cPanel for its versatility and popularity. It is the middle ground with elements of all the best.
Are there any free control panels?
Absolutely but many customers find they do not like them or they are not as polished as the paid, commercial offerings.
