“As it happens, Mr. Potter has taken it upon himself to follow Mr. Malfoy with some frequency.” Dumbledore smiled fondly at the mention of Potter. “So, naturally, I’m informed of your godson’s whereabouts. I know you care for the boy, but maybe this is for the best. He will play his role, and you will play yours.”

Severus’s frustration grew as Dumbledore continued on. The mention of Potter was telling—a clear indication of where the old man’s priorities lay. As long as the precious boy was safe and sound, bully on anyone else. He could picture the horror on his Lilly’s beautiful face if she’d been there to see his indifference over a student.

Her head lifted with an amused huff and just the barest of smiles, but it made him swell with pride, so much so that he had to turn his head away to hide his smile. Not even Pansy’s preening and gushing when he used to sing her praises made him feel like Hermione did when she’d smile at something he’d done. He glanced back, and the slight pull of her lips had grown into a genuine smile.

There she is.

He, Draco fucking Malfoy, sole heir to the Houses of Malfoy and Black, Prince of Slytherin House and complete arrogant arse, had made the Golden Girl smile.

“Yes, I suppose I did take advantage of the extra time to prepare for next week’s lessons,” she agreed, a light blush dusting the top of her still blotchy cheeks.

If it weren’t for the whole house rivalry business, Draco would have freely admitted that red and gold were definitely her colors.

“Hey,” she said brightly, her cheeks pink from the cool air and exertion of walking out to the pitch.

“Hello,” he greeted and gave her braid a little tug. “I like this.” He felt his cheeks fill with heat—the words having spilled out without his permission.

A shy smile pulled at Hermione’s lips, and Draco was struck with the unexpected desire to see her in one of his Slytherin jumpers.
