I don’t know if they’ve done it for other idols, but they definitely did it for Tae and Joon too. There were loads of livestream notifications yesterday, just like now. I think one of them even started streaming in the middle of the night, 😂. BTS is just a whole different phenomenon, and with all this happening right in the middle of FESTA, with hundreds of fans flying out to Korea for it all, it makes sense that everything’s blowing up a bit.

squid game is not activism it is not groundbreaking it is made for entertainment and is an engaging story made with the intent to also be an export it is a big budget netflix show. in fact it is exactly as much a critique of capitalism as the majority of south korean media because we as a people are constantly suffering under US imperialism/capitalism and our media reflects our people, though within the limitations of what stories oppressive systems allow us to tell. so kmedia has lots and lots of generalized critiques of capitalism and stark depictions of poverty but almost zero direct condemnation of the rok government as a neocolonial entity and zero open support of communism/the dprk. most kmedia holds references to unspeakable violence and suffering because that is the state in which we live. korean people are able to make memes and costumes and fanart about heavy content without being dehumanizing of korean history and people. white americans in particular seem to be incapable of doing the same. american reception of the show has been extremely based in orientalism (sexualization, decontextualization, self insertion) and colonial rhetoric (projection of violence being the fault of korean people or comparing a show made to be a fable about capitalism to the dprk) and certain pieces of kmedia becoming popular in the US economically reinforces the neocolonial relationship between the US and the rok.
literally no korean person is saying it's an untouchable politically important piece of art it's simply a mirror of what's going on in south korea and it takes effort to be a western person engaging with it to not enact violence on korean people. and americans esp love enacting cultural violence it's kind of their whole thing.
