Chinatown, London - April 2021
The next stage of easing of lockdown restrictions is almost upon London. Streets that are usually packed with people have now laid empty for almost 4 months due to the Covid-19 second wave. On April 12, retail outlets will re-open with food and beverage outlets allowing outdoor patrons. London will move into a post-pandemic era where urban spaces will start to evolve to re-define its purpose in a megacity. It remains to be seen how this next period of growth (or otherwise) will shape the future of London.
Scenes of the underground
COVID-19 London - a city on the verge of lockdown. Photographed between 1830 to 1930, 18 March 2020
The eerie, surreal scenes of a global city such as London emptying itself of human activity is extraordinarily strange. Everywhere I walked, there was silence apart from the occasional taxi and bus traffic or pockets of people commuting.
It is almost as if the city’s soul has deserted its body, leaving the skeletal structure to languish in the stillness that is remaining of a once vibrant and growing city.
Although temporary in its hibernation, London and with many other cities around the world have now changed. The social and economic repercussion from this global pandemic is now being confronted by its inhabitants, businesses and the government. What becomes of it remains to be seen as the effects of coronavirus lingers on.
Beckoning hope, I look forward to venturing out to the same vantage points again in the future when the city has regained its pulsating vibe and beautiful charm.
Heatwave. London.
