CZECHIA WHERE: Bistro Bohem (600 Florida Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001) *has since permanently closed* Yes. It's new name. Czechia. Not the Czech Republic. Interestingly, in 2013, Czech president Miloš Zeman recommended the wider official use of Czechia, and in April 2016, the government agreed to make Czechia the official short name. This is another old one from Washington DC last year that I forgot to put up. Cause I'm lazy... but now that I'm working on the blog, I should probably write something about it. ;) The shop, Bistro Bohem, was really small and cute, a cozy little hipster coffee nook. I went with all the stuff I couldn't pronounce, the vepřo (roast pork), knedlo (bread dumplings) and zelo (stewed cabbage). When I told the waiter I couldn't pronounce them and pointed to them on the menu, he just laughed and said he didn't know how to pronounce them either since he'd only been working there for two weeks-- so I'm guessing it might not have been completely 100% authentic. heh. I also got the classic apple strudel because it looked amazing. I believe one of my non-blood related aunts was from Czechoslovakia. My side of the family stopped talking to their side a while back, but if she is able to make apple strudel that is this good maybe it's time for the feud to end so we can all come together over some yummy Czechia food. Just sayin... It was a very meat and potatoes kind of meal overall. Classic old style European. NOTE: Another good one bites the dust... this restaurant has sadly closed since the eating of this meal... a directory of other Czech restaurants/shops can be found here.
