There are several different types of knee injuries. The most common types of knee injuries are:
Fractures: The bones in and around the knee joint could be fractured due to trauma or an accident. The patella is the most common broken bone in the knee joint.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries: Athletes who participate in contact sports like soccer and football often injure their ACLs which run diagonally down the front of the knee. Rapidly changing the direction of motion or improper landing from a jump can also cause an ACL tear.
Dislocation: When one or more knee bones slip out of their proper place and alignment, the condition is known as a knee dislocation. The condition could occur due to falls, contact sports, and accidents.
Bursitis: Bursae are the small fluid-filled sacs that help in cushioning the knee joints. When these sacs swell and get inflamed due to repeated pressure or overuse, the condition is known as bursitis.
Tendonitis: An injury to the tendon connecting the patella to the shinbone is known as tendonitis. This condition is commonly seen in young athletes who tend to jump frequently.
Meniscal tears: The menisci are the two rubbery cartilage wedges between the femur and tibia. These menisci can tear due to aging and while performing certain sporting activities.
There are many hospitals in Bangalore where knee replacement surgery is done with great success.
