Centre for Sustainable Food Systems Research Associates
Centre for Sustainable Food Systems Research Associates will be participating in conferences over the next month to share our work on developing more sustainable food systems.
Irena Knezevic will be going to Lisbon to talk about food and the informal economy – so how people use food as way to create non-monetary value including environmental remediation, social capital, volunteer time, sharing, and to provide informal social supports. Case studies include work on fruit gleaning projects, country food harvesting and food sharing in northern Ontario and seed saving projects.
Byomkesh Talukder, a WLU GES PhD student, heads to Paris to take part in the ‘Our Common Future under Climate Change’ conference from July 7. Byomkesh will be presenting some of his work on assessing agricultural sustainability. Byomkesh’s work compares the social, governance, ecological and economic dimensions of food production in coastal areas of Bangladesh.
A CSFS research associate from Mexico, Rocio Garcia, will also be presenting a paper at this conference on the topic of "Transforming Society and Science for Sustainability – Addressing Challenges in Transdisciplinary Research". Dr. Garcia will be speaking about our work to bring together a network of researchers to look at regional food systems as a way to deal with climate change pressures on food systems and how they can provide viable economic development opportunities for rural communities in Mexico, Kenya, Brazil and the Northwest Territories.
