The Knife Grinder

The location is Chisenhale Road, Bethnal Green, London in the early 1950s. This is one of several trades that have now disappeared from our streets. The grinding wheel is driven by a set of pedals or treadles at the front of the machine. The tricycle is equipped with a bell to announce the arrival of the knife grinder who would sharpen knives, scissors, shears, mowers and saws.
