Okay, so... I was piecing together a petition on legalizing butterfly knives in the state of Wisconsin when I found something interesting in the state legislature. Butterfly knives were banned under statute 941.24. Statute 941.24 was the only law stating the illegality of butterfly knives in the state of Wisconsin, categorizing them as a type of switchblade under state law. Earlier this year, state assemble bill AB 142 both lifted the ban on switchblades (which, as classified by 941.24 include butterfly knives), as well as repealing statute 941.24 entirely. By that logic, legally speaking butterfly knives ARE legal to own in the state of Wisconsin, as no other law actually exists banning their ownership. However, as the wording in AB 142 only uses the word 'switchblade' without properly referencing what defines a switchblade in the state of Wisconsin, all sources I have been able to find on the internet still state that the only knives legalized by the bill are automatic knives, whereas the bills wording states that all knives previously categorized as switchblades are now legal to own.
