The numbers on her wrist always seemed to mock her-- they seemed so high in comparison to everyone else. People found their soulmates all the time, and here she was with numbers that counted sweeps rather than perigees. It wasn't fair at all. Stupid, loveless people who said nothing but insults about the nature of romance found someone equally as disgusting as them. How could these terrible people find someone that was made just for them, and she couldn't? Every date she went on, she checked the numbers on her arm under the table, and not once, did they reach zero. All around her, her colleagues paired off, and they laughed at those who were still counting and waiting. Disgusting. She figured she might as well give up and date herself... At least she had faith in fate. No one could ever rival her in that. Yet, she still glanced at the numbers, and they were always much higher than she wanted them to be. She started talking to people non-committally, passing through their lives as they did hers-- after all, Advoca Netrak wasn't anyone's soulmate. She didn't matter. And so it went until she ran into an oddity. An alternate. Not many of those, and certainly not so many that she liked. They always seemed to know better than her, and trust their word over hers regardless. Then again, their numbers all read zero and hers didn't. The other girl smiled and offered her hand. "Latula Pyrope, raddest chick you'll ever meet."Advoca smiled in return. "Well, I'll certainly take your word for it. I'm Addie."She went to take her alternates hand to shake, and out of the corner of her eye, she could see that her numbers all read zero. Go figure. The only person good enough for her just happened to be herself.
