KALTENBERG RITTERTURNIER
By the castle gates was a buzzing bazaar! There was a medieval market where you could buy everything from animal fur, to hunting horns and medieval staffs. They also had custom stoneware mugs which I thought was an interesting touch to my otherwise boring mezzo drink. There were different stages where they had singers, dancers, flamboyant storytellers, and people playing with fire! (as pictured) Then, after a few hours they had a procession going through the centre of the village and it was magical - the crowds were buzzing as all the actors went past. (continued on next post)
KALTENBERG RITTERTURNIER
So a few weeks ago I was sat in the office and my boss came up to me, smile from ear to ear, and asked if I’d be interested in travelling to go to this medieval festival called ‘Kaltenberg Ritterturnier’. I had never heard of it before but the history student in me heard ‘medieval’ (and of course, ‘travel’) and was up for it! Last Saturday was the day - I travelled to a town called Geltendorf in Bavaria where it was all happening.
Kaltenberg Ritterturnier is the world’s largest knight’s tournament. Once I entered it felt like I had stepped into a time machine and gone back to the 14th century. There were 20ft stilt walkers, jesters, knights in armour, jugglers… so many medieval show people. I was so impressed with how authentic their costumes were and the fact that they never once came out of role (you could almost forget that these people were in fact acting!).

My wife and son seem to thoroughly enjoy watching me get thrown around like a rag doll.... 🤔 #knightstournament #level5 #needachiropractor (at LEGOLAND California)
