Sent in my monograph pitch to the publisher this evening. Now we wait.
For sure one of the best things about networking is that after a certain point, people who are also in your field of interests will sometimes reach out apropos of nothing and ask if they can pay you to do something fun and cool. I like it a lot.
Everything happens so much...
Something I sort of wish I had space and time in my thesis to do is talk about this really fascinating leap I’ve noticed between what Discworld fans get from the novels like, morally, ethically, politically, and what Pratchett’s actually doing, because so much of everything he’s doing is just... capitalistic liberal humanism the handguide. Like, I am saying this as someone who loves these books (well, most of them) and does get a lot from them, but it’s just so interesting to me how much people will represent Pratchett’s work as frankly a lot more... progressive (?, not sure a better word) than they fundamentally are.
And I mean, that’s what makes it so interesting, because reading is itself an act of transforming the work. But sometimes I get a little bit sad--or maybe the feeling is exasperation--when I see fans congratulating Pratchett for something that they are bringing to his text, because I always want to be like: no! that’s you! [shakes you by the shoulders] You read so much kindness and love and genuinely big revolutionary ideas in this work because you are looking for them, because that’s how you see the world, that’s what matters to you, you are wearing little heart-shaped glasses of being just a bit more radical than he ever was and that’s great.
[holds up Discworld fans] I just think they’re neat.
Okay so cool news: just received a job offer to help make online courses for the region’s major writing centre + collective so that kind of slaps.
God, I forgot just how hard Making Money sucked, and now I have to write half a chapter about it. Hate that.
