Evening Primrose || Flower & Arthur
“Dear Sammy,
Your grandmother wanted me to send you some of these. She said your dorm room could use a little more color, which I have to admit, I kind of agree with. Ya know, scholarship or not, for the money they’re charging, the least they could do is give the walls a fresh coat a paint. I mean, yeesh. But anyway, I digress. We packed a small pot of evening primroses in there for ya. Just plant them by your window and make sure the RA doesn’t see them. I still don’t get why you kids aren’t allowed to have plants in the room, but whatever. I already did my time, back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth... oy vey. Earth...
Anyway, remember that when they dry out, you can use the heads to make an infused oil and treat that eczema of your’s. I know how dry your skin gets during the winter. Trust me, your mom had it to. Just be careful with it. I don’t need to tell you about which flowers are endangered and which aren’t - that’s what you’re going to school for! Anyway, take care, kiddo. We love you and miss you a whole lot. Make good choices, take all your vitamins, and always use protection.
- Grandpa
As Flower finished reading the letter, he couldn’t help but tear up just the tiniest bit. His grandparents were the absolute nuttiest - as if this letter wasn’t already a testament to that - but they were also the kindest. The two of them truly had hearts of gold and Flower could only hope that, someday, he could ripen out to be as happy and as wise as they were.
Folding the letter back up, he quickly tucked it back into the box, closed the flaps shut, and began making his way out of the post office. Since he first arrived at Aeterno University, Flower’s been incredibly homesick. This school, the student body, the 1st Ring - none of it was home to him, and as much as he wanted to grow a small plant in his room, the RA’s on each floor wouldn’t let him. Of course, that wasn’t about to stop him~
Eagerly, he continued to hold onto his box, the weight of the small flowers shifting back and forth, their cute little stems bundled up into a small sack of water to keep them nice and healthy. Evening primroses were exceptionally rare nowadays. Like many species of flora, they had nearly died out altogether once Earth had been abandoned. Had it not been for a small number of farmers and scientists, they likely wouldn’t exist today, and Flower’s grandparents were among the few of Earth’s immigrants to pack seeds with them when they first boarded onto Aeterno.
Looking both ways before he crossed, Flower made his to the other side of the road, now passing onto the campus quad. He was seriously dreading all of the homework he was going to have to do as soon as returned to his dorm room, but perhaps it could all wait until his little plant pal got settled in.
