He's pointedly ignoring the look that she's giving him from the passenger seat of his truck as they drive away from the meeting that certainly could have gone better. Brown eyes flick between the road and the rearview mirror and his lips press into a thin line when he sees an SUV trailing behind them. It could be innocuous, but his past has taught him not to assume that anyone is innocent. He credits that instinct with why he's managed to stay alive this long. He also knows that there's a bag of stolen contraband in the back seat that wouldn't earn them any favors. "Do we have to talk about it right now or can it wait until we're less likely to get run off the road?"

If August was being completely honest with himself, he was sure he would never find happiness again. It was a sentiment he’d shared with his therapist a few times. And it was something he couldn’t really help but believe. Because he’d sabotaged...anything good in his life, really. Time and time again. Even if what happened wasn’t entirely his fault, he couldn’t say he had no blame in it all. So how could he believe he’d be happy when some fucked up part of him just wouldn’t let him be?

And then he met Emery. Here they are a few months in and he’s still just happy. He hasn’t done anything stupid- well stupid in the bad way at least. As they sit here together waiting for her old friend to show up, August reaches for her hand, smiling as she does. It wasn’t just happiness, it was warmth, love, those were things he never thought he’d have again either, but he feels it all right here with her. Lately August has been messing around with songs that, in his humble opinion, don’t have enough drums. It started with doing some covers for YouTube which he really thought no one would end up seeing. So when they start taking off he wants to keep that momentum going. For a few days he’s been tweaking this one, wanting it at least near perfect before asking an opinion on it. And there’s really only one opinion he’s found himself interested in these days.

He taps his sticks lightly against his knee as he hits call, waiting more than a little impatiently for Em to pick up because he’s excited to share. Even if it’s not his own original music right now he’s feeling more inspired than ever. Which means he wants to share what he’s done as soon as possible... however despite anyone else he could call if she doesn’t answer... he’d rather wait until he could get a hold of her. / @knowthings​ - the girl / city and color
