We were sorry to hear of the death of the larger-than-life Knox Martin at age 96. It may sound grandiose but nevertheless is true: Knox had art history on his fingertips, and there wasn’t a stroke he made that did not refer to some painting he had seen or studied. At 95-years-old, Martin is one of the very last of the “New York School” artists and a towering figure in the world of American contemporary art. Martin was originally discovered by DeKooning who recommended him to the critic Meyer Schapiro. This lead to a one-man show for the young artist at the renowned Charles Egan Gallery. Martin is known for his treatment of the female form—often disassembled-and often incorporating elements of pop and cubism in a flat pictorial space. Martin is also known as a great teacher. Robert Rauschenberg said: “You are my mentor. For years, I would always ask, what would Knox think of my painting?” Martin is currently the subject of a retrospective at @hollistaggart and is being shown at New York Frieze.
