Children of the Stars
I find myself staring off into the distance, causing an innocent bystander to curl up in awkwardness, our eyes having vacantly met 10 seconds prior. I blink to see their partner across from them sipping on coffee oblivious. It’s a simple exchange, the two of them, over coffee and cake, not a care outside of the boundaries of their table and two chairs. Except me: a voyeur to the snapshot of their life.
Like an instinct, my eyes glaze over and saline gathers in ducts. Something so simple and delicate, and though it’s not six feet from my knees, I find it so very far away.
You see, we’re all dreamers, but only the children of the stars can call their dreams a reality. I can hear her voice, watch her vibrant hair flip as her anger rises. And though the exchange is all in my head, it’s the exchange holding back the reality we’re living in another existence. This is what it means to dream, isn’t it?
They gather up their belongings, tossing aside the disposable coffee cups and single shared fork brown from chocolate fudge. I’m sure I saw them flash one another a smile: “I love you.”
And yet, I have to wonder if anyone finds our exchanges enviable, your head through the driver’s side window: an empty parking lot, a look of worry for any future ahead, a goodbye kiss that may never have a partner hello.
We still have a tossing of fire to get through, a pile of conversations, and countless explanations to uphold before our shared cake in an inconspicuous coffee shop can cause lingering eyes to glisten across.
Changing Tenses
I met you years ago, six stories up above the city I grew up in, and I remember someone once telling me that from way up there, I would rule my town. Instead, I abandoned it, trading for it the rolling hills, acres of hardwood trees, and, of course, water. Rivers bringing in the lively spirits, a lake that begs for gazes. What does one look hurt, Cassiopeia asked one day. Narcissus followed suit.
And from my tiny vantage point, I watched the world crumble all around, years of mountain memories falling to nothing, not even a molehill, managing to stump even Einstein’s most devout followers. Yet mine would remain unscathed.
I watched from my window the clouds roll in and could imagine the thunder loud and the lightening dangerously striking indiscriminately, seeking revenge from the pain of yesterday... Or months prior. And I have to continue to remind myself, remind the others, this isn’t your fault.
There is an importance behind two things: understanding your own motivations and communicating your needs. Some of us have neither of those things. Some of us are scared of what that entails.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that there was once a time when two people sat facing one another, admitting to their deepest desires, the ones that, if they were to follow through, could, would probably, hurt someone else. And there it was: to go far away and not consider a single person’s needs or wants from them for as long as they wanted.
We all want to escape sometimes, to not have the responsibilities that come with what? Relationships? Adulthood?
Absolutely.
But fantasies so rarely come true. Until they do. And they’re scary, never how we imagine. Homelessness isn’t exactly what we were thinking.
Of course, are we actually homeless if there is a place to go back to? If home isn’t an actual location? Asking for a nomad.
But beyond absolutely everything, the threats made against me of late, the suspicions and allegations, frustrations and miscommunications, and the lies, there is one thing that I holdfast to:
I know who I am, I know what I want, and no matter what, my spirit will survive.
He knows who he is, he knows what he wants, and he is learning that no matter what, his spirit will survive.
It’s a long road that has to be taken alone, but some day, he’ll be welcomed back home.
