STEM education initiative
Today I sat down with people at the Kodlab at University of Penn to talk about an initiative for schools to adopt STEM education with use of their robots. From being a student in this pilot program I can say that it has been doing well, but our class was not active enough (mainly because of lack of time). This summer however, I am going to be working at the University to assist with this same program. Hopefully i can impact the program enough to be a keystone in developing the project. Trying to teach students in the Philadelphia area is the first step to pushing STEM programs all over the world. We need more young minds to help push the future along.
At Kod*Lab we are very lucky to have many interesting visitors come through our doors. A few weeks ago, one esteemed guest we had the pleasure to host, was Sangbae Kim - director of the Biomimetics lab at MIT. He has developed some terrific robots such as “Cheetah” which can run up to 22 km/h. A while back in research with his former mentor, (Stanford Biomimetics and Dexterous Manipulation Lab Director, Mark Cutkosky), part of the RiSE project directed by our lab's Prof. Koditschek, Sangbae developed dry adhesive technology which he implemented in his Stickybot. His creativity and design ingenuity are an inspiration and drive for our lab.
Shortly before the Penn School of Design classes began, this past summer RHex borrowed a studio and explored its artistic abilities. RHex had three artist assistants, Anna, Mauricio and Diedra, to help with the execution. The path of the robot was not preplanned but in the future RHex will have the ability to walk without human assistance. Most of the painting was done using a tripod gait. Other mark making was done by using the turn in place behavior – can you identify how turn in place works? http://kodlab.seas.upenn.edu/AFrameworkForTheCoordinationOfLeggedRobotGaits/HomePage The turn in place enabled the legs to have longer contact with the ground to make more interesting marks. At first the tire treads from its C shaped legs left decisive traces on the paper. Sponge brushes attached to the legs had the most painterly results. Video by Diedra Krieger and Anna Brill. A bouncing ball can teach us a lot about hopping (and running). Both have a flight phase and periods of ground contact during which they change the direction of vertical travel. Changing the angle of the paddle at which the ball hits it will affect the speed of the ball the same way the changing slope of the ground underneath a hopping robot or animal. In which direction would the angle have to change to increase the speed of a hopping robot? http://repository.upenn.edu/ese_papers/324/
