Women in Lebanon have always fought to acquire fundamental rights. Lebanon ranks third to last in the MENA region when it comes to the gender gap. As a matter of fact, this country has seen growing cases of domestic violence against women, in some cases leading to their death by the hands of their own husbands. This results in higher rates of family abuse and causes an unstable environment for raising children.
KAFA, the leading NGO advocating for women’s rights, has implemented a new law with the Internal Security Forces, creating a hotline: 1745.
It’s intent is to help victims of domestic violence. Victims, or friends and family members of victims, can call the hotline to report instances of abuse against a woman. Abuse comes in many shapes, it’s not only physical, but also psychological.
The reason domestic violence is so prevalent in this country is because of the social acceptance of such behavior. Being patriarchal by nature, Lebanese society has barely provided any resources to help these women, and the religious diversification is slowing down activists’ efforts in battling this crisis.
