If it had come a tiny bit nearer to the earth I am quite sure that none of us would be here now. But it just gave a whisk of its tail and swept off to another solar system far away, and it has never been seen since.

In commemoration of 80 years since first publication of Tove Jansson’s “Comet in Moominland” (“Kometjakten” in Swedish) novel, this piece of fanart is based on 1978 Soviet/Russian stop-motion three-part adaptation directed by Aida Zyablikova and Nina Shorina, with characters reimagined by Irina Vorobyova and Lyudmila Tanasenko (generally female filming crew!), filmed at Soyuztelefilm studio.

Comet in Moominland is a story that has seen two major revisions, resulting in distinct versions of the book with differing illustrations. Today, I've compiled all of the illustration work on the site to finally have everything neatly in one place. https://marsmombestmom.wordpress.com/comet-in-moominland/ For clarity: 1946 - Kometjakten, original publication, most notably wash ink illustrations 1951 - Comet in Moominland, English translation, updates illustrations 1956 - Mumintrollet på kometjakt, reworks the text, illustrations same as 1951 1968 - Kometen kommer, majorly reworks the text and illustrations The 1951 translation is still the English translation used to this day, so the story is intact from the 1946s, although with differing illustration work. However, in Swedish, the 1968 version has been used ever since its publication, with the older versions being long out of print. So in practice, people reading this book in Swedish today will get a drastically different book than people reading in English. I used to think it was a crime that there was no facsimile of the 1946 or 1956 version here, but actually the real tragedy is how the 1968 version has never been translated to English. You guys are missing out, Kometen kommer is a really good book.
