Jutting down some Berseria thoughts uh don’t read if you ain’t done with the game
I really enjoyed it. The game’s strongest point for me was really the characters, I found the main cast (and a great portion of minor characters) to be extremely endearing and they felt quite real (at least by jrpg standards)
Despite her ridiculous chara design, (thanks inomata) I felt really close to Velvet, it’s already been said here and there, but getting to experience the events that triggered her change of demeanor and thirst for vengeance made me empathize with her and root for her. (though it’s a real shame they censored That One Scene, I feel that some players may not have connected so well with Velvet as a result.) I originally thought she was gonna be your typical edgelord, and by some aspects she might be, but her (albeit very dry) sense of humour helped, plus being banded with some the World’s Goofiest Nerds counterbalanced her EDGE. One thing I enjoyed in particular was comparing Velvet under Melchior’s delusion in Aball with post-Big Reveal/Mindfuck Velvet. Delusioned Velvet’s sudden shift to cheerfulness and hope felt genuinely wrong, while the “new” Velvet who’s at peace with her past and the fact that her goal is basically to undo what her little brother wished for felt genuinely… genuine. And I think that newfound inner peace (or, if not peace, acceptance) is what allows her to play the part of the Lord of Calamity™ and use it to her advantage instead of sort of just rolling with it. I think that’s cool.
Laphicet (Phi) is the one who surprised me the most. Kid went from from helpless soft boy with no emotions uwu to straight up ganster. You better hope you can cross the street fast enough so that you don’t stand in endgame Laphicet’s way bc hes ready to fuck you up big time just saying. He gained a whole personality over the course of the game, so, good job kid.
Rokurou is a NERD. I know the resident Nerdlord is supposed to be Eizen, and I won’t argue with that, but Rokurou deserves some room on the podium as well, he even joins the Beetle Discourse for god’s sake! Let’s not forget that he cuts all cooking ingredients into slices so thin that basically everything gains the same texture because he just likes to cut things that much. Let’s not forget that this man shouts his own name when he Switch Blasts into battle, as far as I know he’s the only one who does that. Nerdiness aside, I’m glad Rokurou was Velvet’s first companion. He provided the player with humour and chill when Velvet had none of it, thank god. One thing that piqued my interest was the contrast between Rokurou’s Fratricide Mode and the fun-loving, level-headed guy he usually is, and how the two aspects sort of work together. Let’s take the first appearance of Rokurou’s Fratricide Mode into consideration; If I remember correctly, the party’s trying to find their way out of wherever it is that they ended up at when they run into someone who might have some kind of connection to rokurou’s sword, and by extension, his family and his brother. Rokurou goes full Yaksha, gets wounded, Laphicet tries to help only to get closely aquaintef with one of Rokurou’s blades. Talk about problematic. Now what I found truly interesting was the conversation(s?) Laphicet and Rokurou have in the aftermath of that encounter. Rokurou wears an open smile, and recognizes that he should have made it clear to Laphicet that he wanted no assistance, and promises to explicitely tell Laphicet next time a situation like that arises. Which, to my mind shows a certain maturity and is pretty great way to handle a situation where you suddenly lashed out at someone… except Rokurou almost killed the boy. Great guy, really in tune with other people’s emotions and ways of functioning buuut… still a daemon. I decided I really dig Rokurou, but I can understand why some people might not like him so much.
Eizen was a real treat, a dutiful brother, a trustworthy friend, a man who stands by his principles, a giant dork, the perfect balance between cute and manly, we should all strive to be more like Eizen. Dude legit made me cry. I thought I had grown out of crying over anime characters well I guess not. Man.
Magilou, I knew I’d love her from the day I first saw her. I mentioned Velvet’s design being positively ridiculous, well so is Magilou’s but it just fits her zany witch persona, so I accept it. Also, it actually looks good. That aside, she might be the one whom I understand the least so far. She IS very particular about remaining mysterious and never talks about her past openly. The party does learn about her backstory but I feel like my understanding of her is still lacking. Still, she’s a lot of fun and her habit of pushing people’s buttons with her remarks was oddly refreshing. Like a snarky Pascal. Good stuff.
Eleanor ❤❤ I’m tired of typing but honestly I love her so much. She got her nice slice of the Character Development cake, I’m so happy for her. She starts off despising daemons so much and ends up forging meaningful bonds with (Ka)Moana, Velvet and Rokurou. Wow. But still, her character quest shows that deeply ingrained beliefs (and also trauma) cannot be dismissed that easily. Also man she spends a seizable amount of the game with almost no one at her side, ouch. Laphicet is probably the only one who is willing to trust her from the get go, but man, girl must have felt lonely for a while. On a more lighthearted note, I really liked those moments when she unwittingly debunked Eizen’s previously held beliefs over ancient artifacts and ruins, poor Eizen hates to admit he might have been wrong about something he’s passionate about (understandably so) , and Eleanor just wants to share her knowledge. Notice how those passages appear at a time when Eleanor is still seen as a stranger to the party members, she’s been isolated from her usual peers, social interaction between Eleanor and the Velvet Gang is still scarce and discussing daemons or the Abbey with them is bound to lead to conflict. I might be reading too much into stuff, but I imagine she’s relieved to find that she can connect with them by talking about ruins and history trivia. Too bad she’s destroying Eizen’s dreams of underwater-temple-building-civilizations in the process 😊 Also she’s definitely my fave in terms of chara design. I love her normal outfit, a good balance between cute and militareligious. She gets the best DLC outfits, too: I love that they gave her Natalia’s dress, it looks great on her and it also just happens to be one of my favorit Tales outfit ever. Also unlockable Basic Exorcist outfit looks great on her too thank you 🖒
In terms of minor characters, Moana is definitely my favorite, I wanted to see her smile and be happy. Cute little tree girl and her adopted reptilian parents ❤ Percival and Benwick were cool too imo
Also, ships. Good ships Velvet/Rokurou Good Ship Velvet/Magilou Good Ship Eizen/Rokurou Good Ship Velvet/Eleanor Good Ship (personal favorite) Eleanor/Rokurou Good Ship (personal favorite #2) Velvet/Magilou/Eleanor Good Ship Velvet/Rokurou/Magilou/Eizen/Eleanor Good Ship The Van Eltia Good Ship
There are probably more

Finally
So with all the terrorism scare and shit going around, all students are required to open their bags for a staff member to see before entering the school grounds where I work. So as usual this morning I walked past whatever education assistant was guarding the gate and greeted him like no problem but this time it finally happened. He stopped me and went : “Euh. Ton sac?” lmao finally someone in this huge ass school has mistaken me for a student. I feel so young, so blessed.
