How To Become A Seer
(I’m using “seer” as a translation for “tietäjä”. They were magically powerful finnish people, quite like shamans.) [x]
Tietäjäksi opetetaan siten, että otetaan maata niistä jalkain sijoista, joissa seisotaan silloin kuin ensikerran ukkonen kuuluu. Se maa pannaan sen tietäjäksi opettelevan tuluksiin ja sitten mennään pyhää vasten yöllä metsään ja halkastaan semmoinen haapa, jossa on paljon pahkoja ja siitä rausta puhutaan tievot, niin muistaa. Sitten mennään kosken rannalle ja tietäjä kosken vedellä valaa oppilaansa ja sanoo: "Karaistukoon luontosi, niinkuin ensikerran ukkosen kuuluissa!"
You teach one to become a seer by taking earth by your feet right when you hear the first rumble of thunder. The earth is put in the pupil’s tinderbox and then, on a Sunday night, you go into the woods and split such an aspen which has a lot of gnarls. The knowledge must be spoken through the split, so that one remembers. Then you go to the river beach, the seer must take water from the river and pour it on their pupil, and incantate:
“May your nature toughen, as the first time one hears thunder!”
