Go out and smell the Roses
And so, the Tagalog-dubbed Korean drama "A Rosy Life" already ended it's first run (because we all know they're going to play it over and over again) on local TV. We're just glad it's all over... the drama itself and the plight of the main character "Betsy". And I thought I had enough of soaps - local, Korean, Taiwanese, the heck. But to say the least, this is one of the finest products of the Korean wave. Yes, my sister cried every night (but I never did, gee, am I so numb or what?). Yes, I was impressed by the excellent acting of the entire cast and our voice dubbers are just excellent (way better than real "actors"). Yes, Lee Tae-ran (Kelly) is devastatingly elegant. Yes, it's another memorable and heartbreaking soap that we just wish Filipinos had produced instead. Come on, writers and artists... you can do better than what you've been doing (and kept on doing still). But what made "Rosy" different than most of the melodramas I've seen for the past decade? The most astounding difference is that... There's no freaking clone of the devil! Sure, there are many irritating people and irritating incidents that would really make you want to commit a crime, but there's no character with an evil plot out to kidnap, rape or burn the good guys alive. There's no character with the darkest of all intentions and without any conscience... Mostly are just your typical next door neighbors and relatives who have lost common sense like the rest of your neighbors and relatives. =P Most memorable scene? A bit background first... so, Betsy is going to die because of cancer. Ramon is taking care of her in her last days. (that's the bit background.) I guess the most memorable and emotional scene for me is when, Betsy told Ramon that she's is already ready to die... to go ahead. When, Ramon cried, Betsy asked her "Bakit ka umiiyak?" ("Why are you crying?") He replied, "Umiiyak ako hindi para sa'yo... umiiyak ako para sa sarili ko. Handa ka ngang mamatay, pero ako, ayoko.. Hindi pa ako handa na mawala ka sa buhay ko." ("I'm not crying because of you, I am crying for myself. You may be ready to die, but I'm not. I'm not prepared to lose you in my life.") Of course, I tried my best to stay true to the script. I just want to get the message across. Sadly, people always leave... they may be ready to leave. But how about those they leave behind? Anyway, I just resolve not to watch any more soaps again. I think, I've seen them all already. God, I miss God Mars. (photo taken (stolen?) from http://www.hancinema.net/korean_drama_My_Rosy_Life.php)
"Bakit" by Mark Bautista
Theme song of the Philippine dubbed version of the Korean soap, "Gourmet."
I believe he sang the Philippine national anthem on one of Pacman's boxing matches..
This one's upbeat, and the acoustic drumkit is heard clearly, unlike in most Filipino pop songs. Plus, the piano at the end. magnificko! muah!
Chorus goes like this:
Bakit, sa tuwing nasasakta'y (Why is it, that everytime, you hurt me)
lumalapit, pa rin sayo't nagmamahal? (I come back and love you still?)
Tinitiis ito, (Bearing the pain I feel)
Mahalin mo lang ako (Just so you see my love is real..)
That's a very rough translation, so you can sing along to the tune, but the meaning's essentially the same.
Enjoy ( :
