War Stories: Wahchon Reservoir

I had two brothers that went into the army, both back at the end of the world war. My old man had served too, back in the other world war, he didn't talk about that much but he was damned unhappy when I signed up. "You'll be a sad son'uva bitch Christopher, I told that to your brothers and I'll tell it to you, but you'll live with your own ghosts, I do." I think about this after I get my orders, and again when I get off this boat and when I get on a truck headed to the Wahchon Reservoir.  Seven months later I know what my father was saying exactly. Our six guns fired off 1550 rounds in eight hours, every day for a week, and every day for a week shells came at us, this stopped and started in cycles for those seven months. Then in December we got firing instructions that kept calling for less bags of powder, which meant that the front line was coming closer. When the bags were down to one, we also got the order to retreat. After this withdrawal, we didn't stay anywhere for more than a few days; we always got shelled out. We didn't have time to build bunkers; we slept in foxholes or anywhere on the ground. That December I lost friends, and officers and boys from Minnesota and Indiana and Montana. I didn't know what to do about any of it, I just kept doing my orders, writing home to tell the old man he was right. Then 1954 rolled around and the damned fools who made this insanity signed an armistice. I can't tell you the relief I felt when my ship passed under the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Harbor, I was in tears. The next week I flew to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and was discharged. Those days, I see faces sometimes, and I live in Florida because I hate the cold so those days live in me. Even though I'm proud to have served, my old man was right.
