Don't mind Erya as she 'stealthily' tries to tape a paper fishy to Kayla's back!
Kayla, in all her gleeful playing around, does not notice one bit (it helps that she wears super baggy clothes) but Koshon is 100% going to notice when he finds her today.
“Pardon me, but I’m looking for a young girl. Blonde, pretty, about our age. Have you seen her?” The question came with a well-practiced ease that could have been mistaken for exasperation. This was not the first time his fiancée and charge had run away from home for the day, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.
“We are unfortunately out of travelling funds again, so a nice inn isn’t an option.”
“No problem! I can just hold a mini-concert!”
“And I can sell a few of my potions.”
“I can-... wait... Is it just me or are the women in our group the only ones who actually earn all our money?”
“It can’t be helped. We’re the only ones who don’t have any particular skill sets outside of fighting and our strength. Although I feel bad making them do all the work, it can’t really be helped.”
“Come on now, you two are really helpful in your own ways. Shiela and I are just better for making a quick buck.”
“Somehow, the Princess consoling us only makes it feel worse...”
“Ah... Koshon... What a coincidence seeing you here...”
“It’s no coincidence. I’m truly surprised m’lady can spout such lines when she knows this was how this would end. So, do you want punishment now or later.”
“How about... not at all!!!” The Psiren Princess goes to make yet another break for it, but her guard is already seizing her by her collar.
“Now it is.”
“Noooooo! I just want to play! C’mon, I’m half human too! I should get to play around every now and again!”
“M’lady, as both your mate and your personal guard, I am strongly against this. And your mother gave me very strict orders. I’d hate to defy my future Mother-in-law.”
“My apologies for bothering you sir, but I was hoping you could assist me with something. I’m looking for a young woman who’s about yeh high,” he said, motioning to about his shoulder, “with long blonde hair and a fondness for hide-and-seek.”
Kayla ran on deck to see her worst fears realized. On the stern was a monster that resembled a giant, green eel that looked like it had at some point tried to be human. Dagger-like teeth gnashed inside its mouth as algae-covered gills on its neck opened and closed. In its incomplete-looking hands was a rusty harpoon and it was stabbing it at the crew members, hissing violently. Some of the crew were trying to tie it down with a rope, but it was being consistently knocked aside by the harpoon while the weapon lashed out at them. It was just like before. Like all those years ago when her father had been taken from her. How had it found her? Did she give off some presence she wasn’t aware of? Were they using it to track her? Was that how they’d found her and her mother all those years ago or was everything just pure chance? Either way, she couldn’t let this turn out like the last time. She couldn’t stand here while a Mer killed people who had offered her nothing but their kindness. And, before she knew it, Kayla had drawn a deep breath, worked magic into her lungs, and screamed.
Before Koshon knew what was happening, he was on his knees and covering his ears. The other sailors didn’t’ seem to hear it, but Kayla’s scream was wreaking havoc with them in other ways; half of them stumbled across the deck to find a solid surface to steady themselves on while the other half had simply lost control of themselves and started to sob. Koshon struggled to keep his wits about him. The only reason he could probably even hear her was because he was a Nocturne like she was. After several moments of trying, he gave up on trying to stand, focusing his attention instead on Kayla and the Mer on deck. The Mer had been blown back against the wooden rails, the force threatening to send it back over board, but its eel-like tail was caught in rope. At some point, Koshon managed wonder to himself if this was magic because there wasn’t a creature on Earth that could scream for this long, and the more Kayla screamed, the more she changed; pointed teeth peered out from behind cracking lips, pupils contracted like a fish’s, and shining green and blue scales decorated her arms, neck, and face. Once the crown of scales formed across her forehead, he no longer wondered how she was able to scream this long. The blue stone that hung from her neck glowed and shook violently, growing in intensity the longer she her magical voice permeated the air. The Mer foamed at the mouth; its eyes rolled back in its head and it began to convulse. Enough was enough. It had started as self-defense, but this was turning into torture, and he was not moping eel guts off the deck. But still, for the life of him, he couldn’t get up. It was like his knees were nailed to the deck. Was this part of her power too?
“L-Lady… Kayla,” Koshon said. Crap. His voice was too weak. “You can… stop.” And, surprisingly, she stopped. Sharp teeth hid back behind perfect pink lips and the stone around her neck grew dull and lifeless. The other parts of her transformation, however, didn’t go away nearly as quickly. Her ears and hands had grown webbed spines and the scales that decorated her face and arms had clearly spread beneath her clothes, the bumpy outlines making her clothes look lumpy. Koshon finally felt like he could stand, but the sound had made him disoriented, and when he stood, he stumbled over to the nearest railing, nearly falling in the water as he tried to steady himself. “So… you’re a Psiren…”
