In the true ending, we find that Hinako just wanted to have the freedom & time to make her own choices, wanted to live a life full of passion. The more someone pressured her to do something, the more she wanted to do the opposite.

So, it makes sense why the more the doll entity told Hinako to not trust the Fox Mask, the more Hinako wanted to trust & follow him 🤭. Why the more Shu & Sakuko were opposed to the marriage, the more she wanted to go through with it. And why the more the Tsuneki Clan & her family pressured her to marry, the more she wanted to run away from it.

Once she finally gained the freedom she fought for (and was able to come to an understanding with her parents), she realized she was definitely not opposed to marrying Kotoyuki in the future if their feelings were mutual & they met again (which she was hopeful for 🤭). Girl barely left the Dark Shrine after their farewell & already thought she might "propose" to him when she was ready 🤣.

thinking about it now, the reason Kotoyuki's letters are all sandalwood-scented isn't to show he casted a spell on Hinako, but to reveal a spell was casted on him. 🤔

Sandalwood scent is only a key trait of successful love spells, not just any spell attempt:

The Fox Ancestor states when a girl with divine power is born, a spell is casted on the clan's heir:

Meanwhile, there is no spell on Hinako, as she is still internally battling with herself regarding her feelings:

If her love was the result of a successful love spell, then she would not be conflicted about what she wants. The spell would have overrode everything else she desired.... which is reminiscent of Kotoyuki's behavior. Hinako became the only thing he wanted, forgetting even his childhood dreams.

The Fox Ancestor insults Kotoyuki for not using trickery to make Hinako his bride. Which again confirms he never once used a spell during their courtship.

If Hinako were the one with a spell on her, it would've definitely been brought up not just through the journals and documents, but in the cutscenes.

Except, the only one who ever speaks about being under a spell is Kotoyuki. 🤔🤔

So that's why Kotoyuki's letters are accompanied by the scent of sandalwood. It's a misdirection of who the love spell was truly cast on.

(Also, even with the love spell confirmation, none of this negates Kotoyuki loves Hinako by himself. In a post-End4 run, Hinako confirms that his feelings for her are real. It implies that they would've fallen in love without anyone else meddling. They never needed a spell/arranged marriage to have a relationship with each other.)
