"You look very beautiful"
Silent hill f/ Chizuruya gang, but make it shojo romance from Rinko's pov. I actually just wanted to draw ~sparkly shojo eyes~ so it was initially supposed to be just Rinko and Shu, and then i drew everyone else....
I am influenced a lot by Rinko's actress, Yuka Iijima, and Rinko has become my favorite sh f character, so part of me kinda wants to reimagine the story from her pov. Rinko's actress feels like someone who came out of a shojo manga, so I like to draw her whenever I want to experiment with shojo art styles. I also read a few showjosei manga that reminds me of the human drama and themes of sh f, which is another motivation to why I want to draw in a more "feminine" manga style.
it still makes me go insane that somehow no social media site bothers to implement interleaved text and images. Fediverse cannot support it broadly, Bluesky can't handle it, Facebook can't do it, Twitter can't do it, fucking, LinkedIn doesn't do this, somehow only Tumblr has this, and it barely even counts as a popular social media site.
well you see we're the new pdf
i can't overstate how much this used to be the default on blogging platforms. blogging used to involve as much mixed content as you felt like. the goofy defunct french blog platforms (Skyblog, U-blog) where i was making my first posts in 2004 had that. you could embed media or javascript or applets or anything you wanted. the reason this feels like a unique tumblr-only feature now is that rotten as it is tumblr is one of very few remaining blogging platforms in 2026. everything else is microblogging now. everything else is twitter now
i think one of Shu's core traits is how outside his relationship with Hinako, he doesn't really maintain other friendships.
We know how much Hinako means to Shu. We know he would do anything to help her no matter what. We know he loves her and wants her to be happy. They're partners, members of the Space Army since childhood. He even makes medicine for her headaches and give her a safe space where she can vent about her family troubles.
By all accounts, Shu is a really good friend to Hinako. He accomodates her, he supports her, he reaffirms who Shimizu Hinako is.
But then we see his interactions with Sakuko and Rinko, who he's known since middle school, and he barely acknowledges them. When Sakuko and Rinko show up at Chizuruya, all three girls are happily bantering and teasing eachother as friends. Shu's the only one who doesn't interact with the group at all, not even giving a passing greeting.
It's very telling as well that in the Dark Shrine segments, Rinko and Sakuko's documents mention not just Hinako but eachother, reflecting that they all felt connected in their own ways. Shu's documents, however, only mention Hinako. Rinko and Sakuko are never mentioned once. In his "Dark Shrine" section all his most precious possessions are things relating to Hinako, and he notes himself he'd only let her touch them.
When Hinako points to Sakuko's body in visible grief, Shu glances over but he doesn't comment on Sakuko at all. He doesn't even show any visible signs he's sad about her death (ex. looking down, blinking multiple times to push away tears, trembling lips, shallow breaths, etc.) Shu doesn't do any of that. He doesn't even mutter anything to himself like "poor Sakuko..." It's like she's a stranger to him.
Instead, he's more focused on how distraught Hinako is.
Instead of giving a moment to grieve Sakuko, Shu redirects the conversation to being about the strange situation they're in. One of the first things Shu says is how "even if no one else is left in this world, it's good you're still around, partner". Shu is fine living in a world where it's only him and Hinako.
But Hinako doesn't feel that way. She immediately replies by asking him where Rinko is.
This is one of the few times Hinako gets visibly mad at Shu, and it's because he abandoned one of their other friends.
Hinako's world isn't limited to just the two of them. She deeply values her friendships with her other friends too. It's only after Hinako scolds him for ditching Rinko that Shu now focuses on "meeting up with Rinko" from that point on. He doesn't decide this bc he was worried for her, but bc Hinako was. Sakuko and Rinko don't exist in Shu's "world", and I think that's one of the key differences between Shu and Hinako.
For Shu, Hinako is his only partner. It's always been the two of them, and as long as just the two of them understand eachother, everything will be fine.
It's especially interesting when you consider Rinko is the one who originally invited Shu to Chizuruya in the first place, but he doesn't even say hi to her there. When they meet up with her, Shu avoids talking with her beyond casual pleasantries, and is dismissive whenever she brings up Hinako's "death". Rinko's documents also say that when Hinako "no longer plays with him," rather than finding a different activity or someone else to play with, Shu plays alone.
Not to say Shu has to open up to Rinko if he doesn't want to, but the fact he doesn't have anyone else to talk to sure explains why his "Dark Shrine" self is suspended to the ceiling by heavy metal chains, and suffocates when Hinako leaves him behind.
It's an interesting writing choice to give this "I only need you in my life, no one else" trait to Shu. It's a fun interpretation of the "loyal childhood friend," where his earnest and dedicated attitude can seem great for the partner he centers his life around, but isolates him from everyone else. It's prevented him from forming closer connections with other ppl, but it also makes him very dependent on Hinako.
One of the notable aspects of Shu and Hinako's friendship is how conflict-avoidant he is. Shu is dependent on Hinako because she's the only real relationship in his life. As a result, he is very cautious about doing/saying anything that could potentially hurt Hinako's opinion of him. This can be seen in their very first scene where they sit together in awkward silence and avoid discussing the "elephant in the room" (her arranged marriage). They're both clearly bothered by it, but they also are afraid to address it.
Despite them being longtime friends, they avoid talking about difficult subjects about the "future", and Shu himself refrains from giving Hinako advice besides reaffirming who "Shimizu Hinako" is, or saying he'll always support her. When Hinako first asked him for advice about the marriage proposal, Shu immediately steps back and tells Hinako to "think about it for herself". From Hinako's pov, I can see why it might be frustrating to be told this when what you're seeking is someone else's perspective on it.
But rather than take a risk and say "Don't get married!" or ask "Do you even like Kotoyuki?", Shu is more afraid of disagreeing with Hinako. Or worse, the possibility he doesn't know Hinako as well as he thought he did.
This is also why Shu secretly gives Hinako the red capsules hoping it will "change her mind" rather than talking to her. Because Shu will not take any action that risks damaging how Hinako sees him. He is afraid of taking responsibility for his actions/words, because then it means willingly placing himself in a vulnerable position. It's why Shu phrases the red capsules as being "for Hinako's sake" rather than it being his own decision. He phrases it as Hinako's "choice", but the truth is he wants her to agree with him, because "his partner" would understand him.
I wonder if this is partly what makes "Fox Wets Its Tail" actually rather depressing, and why Shu is missing for "Ebisugaoka in Silence". 🤔
FWIT can be interpreted as Shu's "happy ending," where its only him and Hinako left together in Ebisugaoka while everyone else is gone, including Sakuko and Rinko (Fog Sakuko still being "dead" while Fog Rinko is still "missing"). He doesn't Have to expand his world, because Hinako is all he needs. But the result is Shu never confesses to the red capsules nor admits he's in love with her. He never acknowledges his decisions here, attributing everything solely to Hinako having courage. He stays as her always-agreeable friend, always supporting her without any conflicts, but never having the courage to take responsibility.
On the other hand, Shu not being present in EiS could hint he's stepping back and learning to live in a world not just limited to the two of them. Him saying "I can't expect your help anymore" in his letter acknowledges that he's been dependent on Hinako bc she's been his only close friendship all this time.
Shu isn't incapable of forming connections with other people. After all, he starts becoming friends with Kotoyuki in both neutral endings. Shu's world can expand too, as long as he has the willpower to take that step. Perhaps him being "gone" means he went to wherever Rinko and Sakuko went after SHf. To the future he now has the courage to face, while having the security and trust that he and Hinako will always be partners, no matter what. At least I think so.

The Foxes' Wedding
I recently discovered this interesting story called "The Foxes' Wedding," originally documented in the collection Tales of Old Japan (1871) by A.B. Mitford. It's a folktale that is so reminiscent of Kotoyuki, I would not be surprised if Ryukishi used this as inspiration.
It's very short, so I highly suggest reading it!
To summarize, It's a lighthearted story. The fox groom protagonist is depicted as being dedicated, earnest, and loyal, who successfully marries his fox bride without any issues. In the end they live happily ever after surrounded by their many children.
Keeping Silent Hill f in mind, the first thing I noticed is we never see the fox bride's perspective. We don't know what she thought of her future groom, or if she originally wanted to get married. The only thing mentioned is there was "not a fault to be found on either side". Although the story is about a union between two foxes, this story only focuses on the fox groom's achievements. The fox bride is little more than the reward the fox groom obtained for working hard. Her presence in the story even disappears entirely after the birth of their children.
While it's not confirmed this story was inspiration for SHf, I think it's a interesting way to show how a story can be perceived differently by simply changing who the protagonist is. A happy ending for one person can be horrific for another. For the fox groom and Kotoyuki, this marriage is a cheery happy ending he's been waiting years for. Perhaps for the fox bride and Hinako, this was a role she was made to play without anyone asking her what she thought of it.
you're allowed to draw. draw badly even. draw and then delete it. draw and rework it and then delete it anyway. draw only half of it and the other half three years later. in one style or another. in different styles in the same week. traditional or digital. you're literally allowed to draw however you want
I feel like generative AI is much like the mechanical bird in the story The Nightingale by HC Andersen.
I grew up with Andersen's fairytales and many of them has made a permanent home in my heart. The nightingale (or nattergalen, as is the original title) has always been amongst my favourites.
It is the tale of how the emperor of China learns that a great bird exists in his empire and he asks it to come and sing for him. The song deeply touches him and all the people at the palace, and the little bird is celebrated for his voice and song.
One day, a box is sent to the emperor, and within is it a golden mechanical bird, an artificial imitation of the real nightingale. They are asked to sing side by side, but it doesn't work well. The nightingale improvises and goes with his mood, while the mechanical bird can merely repeat how it has been programmed.
Still, hearing the mechanical birds makes the crowd ooh and ahh, and it can sing without mistakes and much more often than a real bird. It is wound up again and again for the amusement of the emperor and the people. The real nightingale leaves discouraged.
But as the time goes on, the mechanical bird starts to break down, and eventually, it doesn't work anymore at all. When the emperor becomes deadly ill, the soft song from a nightingale is all that can save him, but his little wind-up toy cannot help him.
The real nightingale comes back and saves the emperor's life, for it had been so touched when it first sang for the emperor and it made him shed tears. It remembers that first touch of something oh, so special as sharing its voice. The emperor learns the error of his ways.
Gen AI can only ever be an intimidation of the real thing. It is stuck in the same grooves as a mechanical bird. It can do it "perfect" and faster than humanly possible, but it is and always will be an imitation that cannot stand on its own. It might be enough to impress but it is not sustainable.
Only with the real music, art and writing can what is special be perserved. It must be created by living beings. We are able to adapt and change and create stuff outside of set parameters. But it is very understandable that it is highly discouraging to see gen AI spit out music, art or writing that to the untrained, or uncaring, eye is praised.
I reckon that the well will dry up eventually, whether it will be a crash, or behind a high paywall, and everyone who grew accustomed to it will cry out in despair. The mechanical bird is broken. Death will come and sweet song is not there anymore.
The nightingale flew home and continued with his life. He kept singing to the forest, but in another version of the tale, maybe he had stopped singing. It would have been a tragedy for both himself and all the people who eventually realised their folly in depending on a mechanical bird over the real thing.
So keep creating. Keep making music. Keep making art. Keep writing. Gen AI is imitating us, and it is arguably trying to replace our works, but it is not as good as the real thing and it cannot last.

Someone pointed out to me that the fox statues get destroyed in the default ending for Silent Hill f. I get that it means Hinako's on a rampage and that her mind's falling apart, but I've also seen it interpreted as Hinako killing off Kotoyuki's family and beyond.
Given both worlds are kinda falling apart in the ending, kind of wondering if it means either the Water Dragon got unsealed and we're seeing the damage being done while teleporting, or Hinako's the one destroying the whole town like a monster gone loose.
ooo it could be a mix of both!
I always saw Ending 1 as having the most straightforward storyline, where it's Bride Hinako having a mental breakdown and fleeing the wedding out of desperation. She then killed off anyone who stood in her way, whether they were Tsuneki or her own friends and family.
But like you mentioned, the Water Dragon has been a threat lurking underneath Ebisugaoka the whole story.
Regarding ending 1, the name in japanese is a bit different. While I don't have the exact name right now, I remember that it read more as "The curse comes back home" or something like this. The description for the ending also stated thta Hinako was drowning in a "swamp" of doubt and it immediately reminded me of two things
The way Hinako describes her feelings for Kotoyuki (as being dragged into a swamp) and the exact words in Kanta's apology (be free from this curse).
If the Shimizu are tied to the Water dragon, then it could be interesting to see the family as being also "cursed" due to this connection
Seen this way, then the "curse" in question could parallel the Tsuneki curse where a love spell is cast on the heir to seek a bride
Since the Water dragon is mainly revered out of fear + associated to the past, it can also be easy to see the tie with Hinako's own anxieties
Nice insight!! It's interesting to consider the Shimizu family as already having a "curse" upon them and it's up to them, particularly Hinako's parents, to resolve it (like generational trauma).
I looked back on some things and here's the only other mentions of the Shimizu family I could find..
According to the Tsuneki records, it seems the Shimizu have some significance with water. The "crimson spring" possibly connects to the "crimson water" puzzle Hinako solves later that will both break the seal rock containing the dragon and give her the ability to purify the sacred sword.
Perhaps this is another reason why Hinako attracted the attention of both the Inari and Tsukumogami, she would be able to change the foundation of their beliefs.
Since the Water dragon is mainly revered out of fear + associated to the past, it can also be easy to see the tie with Hinako's own anxieties
I've been thinking a bit and I have a tiny theory on what the water dragon+methods represent for Hinako metaphorically:
If the Water Dragon represents Hinako's fear, then the methods used to "contain the dragon" reflect the ways Hinako copes with fear, referencing her parents' behaviors.
The sacred sword, what Hinako uses as a weapon, is powered by the wrath of vengeful spirits. In a similar way, Hinako uses anger to protect herself like a form of self-preservation. (something Kanta does too by using anger to "not show weakness").
The sealing rock is used to suppress the dragon. This represents how Hinako represses her emotions so she doesn't have to confront her fears, like waiting for it to disappear on its own. (similar to Kimie, who avoids direct confrontation, instead waiting for the problem to blow over)
I think this is also why in order for Hinako to reach Ending 4, she has to purify the sword (let go of her anger) and unseal the rock (stop repressing her emotions). Once she's able to truly confront her fears and overcome them does she achieve peace and understanding in her own way. 🤔
we've got a life to love living.
advice that has literally saved and improved my life

Stop doing it scared and start doing it scary. Invoke sheer eye-clawing terror into all those who have ever wronged you
