After reading some Core77 Studio Visit & Questionnaire posts I’ve made some notes about operations, management their tools, and how they’re used in various studios. I also give a few examples of questions I hope are worthwhile, challenging and understandable. I love asking questions and usually have more than what is deemed socially acceptable, and so I distilled a few critical thinking tinctures, but be warned some questions can be hit-or-miss and you must be ready to elaborate and open to all sorts of answers.
Designers who run studios have a clear understanding of their proficiencies and processes. They struggle with time management, keeping procrastination positive and the changing world. They are excited about what the ‘real digital age’ holds, or the redefinition of the NEW middle market. They are realistic about design as their business, citing goals of staying functional as a studio, or providing good design a good price.
How do you overcome challenges?
How might a project flow through your studio?
What's the key to your day to day success?
Questions I might ask a potential employer;
How will this role help me to achieve my goals?
What’s something I can expect every day?
How do you define failure in this role?
What kind of studio would I want to work for?
An environment where ideas flow openly, where the best idea prevails, where individuals are free to work in their own way, where there are multiple venues for collaboration. I’d want to work in a studio that has a greater vision of themselves, that wants to do big work, or playful work, or fun work. A studio that attracts all sorts of crazy propositions and takes on the most ambitious. A place that gets ideas out there.
