Learning to Fly

Let’s not count our eggs before they hatch, but I came into this project thinking the ability to print, in 3D could be beneficial if that’s the avenue I go down. I copped this Tevo Tarantula and I’ve been spending a bit of time each day tinkering, learning, and adjusting this thing to print as I command. To be sure, it’s not exactly consumer friendly at this point, and I’ve mostly just pumped out ‘test prints’, calibration cubes and parts to stabilize this frame, Today was a good day, and I printed this enclosure for the main board in anticipation of a larger cooling fan I’m expecting this week. This should keep my cool as I give ABS printing a go and make some functional stuff. I’m seeing a lot of potential with this, but at this point, just getting familiar doesn’t feel too kinetic at all.

I had a vision for a project that was leather, but I had never worked with it before. I asked a lot of questions to the guy in e leather store and that gave me a base from which to learn from.

Would you believe that this was the pan I initially presented to the guys from TVS? It’s amazing what sort of new direction a little feedback can give you. In this case they said stamp drawing and forming was less expensive than casting, and the handle could not be the same material because of the heat transfer.

I figured HEY, this would be a realistic way of seeing what colors work and which ones do not.

Sufficiently satisfactory. It looked enough like the rendering and my vision that if I was to take issue with it, it’d be entirely on the design, not my model making skills. But from about this far back at a few angles this thing looked good to me.

While working on Canvas with my brilliant classmate Oriana Diamond-Riaño we spent a ton of time trying to make a textile based fastener that would not require complex instructions, additional tools or hardware.

In the end, we had to sacrifice on the textile front and settled on brass grommets. While they are a bit of added weight and won’t eventually degrade like the cotton, the time saved in reduced manufacturing steps outweighed the novelty of an innovative textile solutions. Sometimes what makes sense isn’t exactly what we want, and that’s okay - it was an important thing to recognize.
