Delighted to have #KQIB showing in #France tonight! How cool is it to have all these amazing performers now translated into French!! And what an undertaking to get here... In fact, we had to "invent" a translation for the word drag as a noun! Subtitling work was a complete beast (months of prep to get this in place, weeks spent on translation with multiple ppl, culminating in working 15 hrs a day for the last 2 weeks to subtitle the film).... but wow.... pretty d*mn cool to see the film on a big screen like this!! (A bit of a long post here...lots of thoughts & some inspiration from this process!) #UniversitéDeTours and in particular a handful of people have been working hard to open up the French "system" in regards to traditionalist ideas of #gender #binaries concerning identity. Like the work of KQIB, & the work of the people in the film (in their art as #dragqueens, #dragkings, and #trans performers, or in their work in #gender, #lgbt and #queer #advocacy ), these efforts are often in the trenches, taking years, and can often be somewhat quiet or seemingly imperceptible...the work of engagement, sometimes 1 person at a time... My heart lifted up when the host said, "People sometimes say to me, why go through all this effort (language in materials, information & photos on identity cards, #genderneutralbathrooms ), when it's only strongly impacts a small percentage of people? It's tiring for you and so much time; why bother doing all this work for only a handful of students? And I reply: I would do all this work if it were only for one person. If I *can* make life better for even just one person, I must do whatever I can to make that happen." That's right out of my heart, and it's so good to get that faith renewed especially in the strange political times.
