kraftcheese replied to your post “Yeah, I’m a Trotskyist. Yeah, I sell papers. There are political and...”
I'll bite bc I've always wondered n nevet understood; why DO trot orgs still sell papers?
I'm glad you asked! Okay, so: Obviously, it’s important to have a paper to get your ideas and analysis out there. “But this is the digital age! Why do you need a paper?” Because as Lenin wrote, a paper is also a collective organizer, it’s a scaffolding around which to build an organization. Putting the paper together and distributing it helps to build and consolidate the apparatus of the organization, and gives comrades a form of regular activity. No demos or events this week? Have a paper sale! Your work isn't entirely dependent on the ebbs and flows of the movement. Not to mention, having a paper in your hand is easiest way to start a conversation about politics at any kind of event. And instead of saying “check out our website (y’know, some time, when you get around to it, if you remember to, and if you remember the url)”, you can say “here, have our paper” an actual physical thing that a worker or student can keep with them, that will remind them of you. And having subscribers is a good way to keep your periphery up to date and in touch. But why ask for money? Isn’t that annoying? Not to the right people. Asking people to pay for your paper shows that you take it seriously, and you value your own work, and that it's worth something. And if someone pays for it, it shows they're genuinely interested and will more likely actually read it. The main point of selling papers is to meet people, and a willingness to spend money on communist literature is a good indicator that someone has a real interest. Plus, I've been to demos where other groups just gave stuff out, and it all ended up in the garbage. And not to mention the fact that you want the paper to be self sustaining. You never want to rely on ads or grants, because that can impact the political line of the paper. And the membership dues of the organization should be going to pay for things like full time organizers and office space.
