How to find the perfect kratom dose
In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been on the kratom train for the past few months. I recently began burning kratom daily, sometimes dosing two or more times during the day with no issue every 3 to 4 hours. I rotate between strains every day, and I have not had to increase my dose. I can hardly begin to explain just how much of a boon it’s been to me.
One thing that people who are into kratom therapy should keep in mind is that a balance must be maintained. Too little, and you won’t get the benefits people rave so much about. Too much, and you’ll feel sedated or experience some unwanted side effects, effectively wasting your kratom. When you hit the sweet spot and know how to stay there, your kratom experience will be absolutely wonderful.
(Curious about why we “burn” kratom? Read this and my post on why kratom is not for human consumption)
So if you choose to burn kratom therapeutically on a daily basis for a better mood and drive to succeed, what should you do to hit that sweet spot and keep it there?
I’ll explain what I do to keep tolerance buildup to a minimum and how to keep track of everything.
#1 Protip for Kratom Burners: Get a Scale!!!
As I’ve explained before for people who use bulk powders of any type, kratom in its powdered form is not different in that you absolutely must have a properly calibrated digital scale, just like this one that Powder City offers — There is no better way around it.
(My personal opinion: You don’t need anything more precise than to a hundredth of a milligram. Anything that is properly calibrated and can register 0.1 grams accurately is fine.)
Kratom isn’t one of those things that you can simply scoop and eyeball before you burn it. There’s no rule that you can’t, but it’s generally not a good idea. A modest looking spoonful can range in grams, and one gram can be a huge difference between feeling good and feeling gross.
I used to just eyeball it in the first couple of times I burned it, and in retrospect it was a stupid idea. I found out firsthand that it raised my tolerance quickly, made nausea more frequent, and made me wonder why people bothered taking this stuff in the first place. If you want to enjoy your burn, don’t make these dumb mistakes.
When I started using a scale before ever burning my kratom, it made a HUGE difference. In fact, I will never burn kratom without measuring it ever again.
I found out that for myself, burning 1 – 1.5 grams (basically never more than 2) of the stuff at a time from Happy Hippo is enough to get me to a nice place where I feel happy, worry-free and productively motivated on just about any strain. With the scale, I no longer had to worry about getting nauseous from accidentally burning too much, or burning too little and not getting the benefits I want.
The key however is that you have to dial in your proper dose and stay there. I am super sensitive to most substances I take, so my preferred dose will probably be very different from yours. I will explain how you can find your proper magic dose.
How to Dial in your Magic Kratom Dose
When burning kratom, dose is everything. Most of the people who take it in these parts of the ‘net will likely agree.
Please note that all of this is based on the kratom sold by Happy Hippo. No one should ever assume that dosage ranges will be the same for other vendors let alone the strains: these are only approximations. Strains, metabolisms and subjective senses vary. You will need to experiment for yourself to figure out what you need.
Nevertheless, all of the Hippo kratom strains I’ve tried seem to have similar potency by volume. I never have to take more than a half gram outside my personal dose.
If you are new to burning kratom, you’ll want to make sure you do it right the first time.
Get your scale, kratom powder, and a pen and notepad (important!)
Measure out 1 gram of kratom (1 gram if you’re sensitive to stuff, 2 if you’re not)
Burn this dose on an empty stomach, making sure you haven’t eaten for at least two hours (sometimes first thing in the morning before breakfast helps)
Make a note of how you feel 20 to 30 minutes later
After this, we can figure out where your best dose sits.
“I don’t feel much of anything”
If this is the case, you can burn .25 to .5 grams of the same strain you began with. After you burn this, wait another 20 to 30 minutes and see how you feel. These ranges may be small to some, and they probably are.
My motto? Don’t get cocky and overdo it!
As a general rule, the more body mass you have, the more you will need to take.
The more food you’ve eaten/the more recently you’ve eaten, the more you will need to take (try it on an empty stomach!)
Other people recommend starting at 2 or even 3 grams, which can be good for bigger guys and people who aren’t sensitive to much. If you’ve never burned before, I think you should be patient and give it a try at lower doses first to get more of a feel for how this stuff works.
Chris, the brains behind Good Looking Loser and Happy Hippo, recommends these ranges by body weight:
As a newbie you’ll probably need 3 to 5 grams total.
If you’ve eaten food recently – it might be closer to 6 grams.
If you are below 155lbs, 2 to 4 grams is probably where you should begin.
Females (that are not overweight) fall into the 1.5 to 2.5 gram range.
His ranges are on the high end for me, but a lot of people might find it helpful as a starting point.
“I feel really sleepy and/or nauseous”
This means you’ve burned a little too much. Double-check your scale measurements, ensure everything is calibrated and tared properly.
The tare function, FYI, subtracts the weight of the container you place on the scale first before measuring your powder. I use pieces of foil, little 1 oz. Dixie or Solo cups to measure. If you put your container on the scale (the one from Powder City at least) before turning it on, it will automatically subtract the container weight to zero grams for you. Neat!
My honest personal guess is that most people will need to burn 1 gram minimum to notice anything. People who are less sensitive should start with more. More than 2 grams to feel even a little and you’re probably overdoing it, you have some bunk stuff or you’ve just eaten recently. You probably won’t feel sick dosing below 5 grams unless you are super sensitive like me.
In case you do get sick, there’s always ginger.
“This feels alright, I like it”
Congratulations, you’ve found the sweet spot!
Use the pen and paper to make a note of the strain and the dose you’ve taken. Other notes such as whether you’ve just eaten can be helpful.
If you want to redose, use this reference dose again in about 3 to 4 hours (assuming you’ve not eaten much, or ate after your previous dose) to confirm that you have indeed found your sweet spot.
If you have eaten, you may need to add a gram or two in order to feel anything more, but I personally do not burn kratom immediately after eating. I either burn about 15 – 20 minutes before I chow down or just wait a few hours.
This method of dialing in your personal “magic” kratom dose not only helps you to consistently enjoy your herb if you choose to burn it regularly: it also helps you to conserve it and to keep you from building up a tolerance too quickly.
Also, none of this would have been possible without the proper guidance. I’d like to give thanks to Chris and Rooster for their Kratom Guides that got me started. Use moderation and stay happy and healthy, folks.
