Member Feature: The Kreeger Museum Embarks on a New Program
‘Rehearsing with the American Chamber Players’
Submitted by: Antonia Dapena Tretter, Head of Education, Kreeger Museum May 18, 2015
The Kreeger Museum has worked with the D.C. Arts & Humanities Collaborative for close to fifteen years—taking advantage of its resources to pay for reduced admission tickets and costly transportation for students from D.C. public and public charter schools who otherwise might not be able to benefit from these out-of-school field trips. Over the course of the past academic calendar, the Kreeger has sought to strengthen our partnership with the Collaborative by hosting one of the quarterly membership meetings and, more importantly, through joint fundraising efforts. Take, for example, the simple act of providing valuable letters of support. With the grant cycle being what it is, the fruits of these labors will not be known for some time, but one generous grant provided by the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation is enabling the Kreeger to waive its fees completely, in addition to paying for the buses, to bring two groups of students to the museum for a new program: Rehearsing with The American Chamber Players. Alleviating these financial hurdles allows the Collaborative to reallocate those funds to additional programming at other cultural venues throughout the District, offering even more opportunities for arts education to the potentially underserved students of Washington, D.C.

The American Chamber Players ensemble, formed in 1985 through the efforts of violist and artistic director Miles Hoffman, will perform pieces from their world-renown repertoire of easily recognizable classical scores and less familiar or newly commissioned American works. A fascinating and delightful program composed of various instrumental combinations, this opportunity will expose young people to chamber music, many for the first time. Students will engage with musicians—Miles Hoffman, Stephen Balderston, Loren Kitt, Joanna Maurer, Sara Stern, and Anna Stoytcheva—directly during an intimate question and answers session following the open rehearsal. This concert experience will take place in The Kreeger Museum's Great Hall, known for its incredible acoustics and a selection of paintings by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Arshile Gorky. According to the Washington Post, "[The ACP] have established standards of chamber music performance equal to any in the world," and they are eager to share their talents with up-and-coming music enthusiasts in the Kreeger's impressive architectural space. Kelly Miller Middle School and Barnard Elementary School will be attending the special student matinee performances on June 5 and June 9 through the Arts for Every Student program. Stay tuned for updates to see the students in action during these field-trips!
