Jacob watches it happen in slow motion, like a train wreck coming toward the station. Kreids is staring down at his phone, blushing to the top of his hockey pants and grinning like a fool, and Leo, who hasn't yet learned to have a self preservation instinct, is sneaking up behind Kreids like the foolish little critter he is.

"Holy shit, man," Leo says, and Jacob gets the distinct pleasure of watching Kreids jump near out of his hockey gear. "Your wife is so possessive."

Jacob snorts. He'd been expecting, when he and Kreids wore matching outfits and held a jersey together, that Mika would get a little wierd about it.

From where Kreids's phone is now sitting on the floor, he can tell that a little wierd was definitely an understatement. He picks it up, glances down at a series of texts that look more violently devotional than any religious text he's ever seen, and hands the phone back to Kreids as a notification in Russian flashes across the top of the screen.

"I mean like, I don't even think people really talk like that outside romance movies," Leo is saying, and Jacob almost feels bad enough for him to shut him up right there. Almost.

"You don't want to live in a romance movie, kid?" Jacob laughs again. Kreids and Mika probably do constitute a whole fucking Hallmark show all their own, but it's also not exactly polite to tell someone they're so sappy about their relationship it should be on TV.

Leo looks a little sorry.

"I mean…"

"You don't want to be loved more than the whole earth?"

Leo's staring at the floor.

"More than anything your girl has ever seen? More than her favorite painting or her favorite song?"

"She literally said—" Leo starts, almost incredulous.

Chris makes a wordless noise of agreement.

Mine, Mika's message had said.

Yours, Chris had replied.

It was gross in the way they are, inexorably intertwined with each other.

Jacob claps Leo on the shoulder and steers him back to his stall.

"You'll find someone," he says, though he knows that's not what Leo's beffudlement had been sparked by. Leo sits down heavy in his stall, like he's been hit by a train.

Jacob rams his head into Chris's bare shoulder on his way back to his own stall.

"Don't take out the rookies right before the game, eh?"

Chris chuckles.

"It's his own fault."

Jacob can't fault that logic.

"He'll learn."

"Nah." Chris smiles. "It's okay, though."

"Tell Miks hi?"

Chris hisses good naturedly, and Jacob laughs, and everything, for a moment, seems back on its proper axis.
