Keep Pride in the Game — The Get REAL Movement
Pride is important. The NHL has made its stance clear that their league is not currently safe for LGBTQ+ athletes. It needs to change.
This is posted on the NHL’s website: “The NHL is committed to building healthy and vibrant communities using the sport of hockey to celebrate fans of every race, color, religion, national origin, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.” (https://www.nhl.com/info/about-the-nhl) But it is a complete lie. A corporation cannot claim to “celebrate” fans that they then disallow teams from showing full support for. The NHL has chosen the comfort of homophobes over the safety and support of LGBTQ+ athletes in its sport. It is despicable. Pride saves lives. The NHL has made it clear that it would rather keep homophobic players feeling content in their stance of bigotry and supported by their organization than help young athletes feel safe and supported in coming out. It’s not okay and we won’t stand for it.
