Backrooms (2026, USA)
Director: Kane Parsons
Writer: Will Soodik (based on Parsons' web series)
Mini-review:
OK, I actually loved this. For some reason I was expecting to be disappointed, but it kind of blew me away. Sure, the ending is somewhat underwhelming, but everything that came before that was gripping. Kane Parsons debuts with a bang, building an incredibly mysterious and almost enthralling atmosphere from the very first scene. If this is what he can do at only 20, the sky is the limit for him. It's amazing that he already has such a great sense of aesthetic. The production design is obviously the standout element of the movie. The sets genuinely capture the vastness of the location, bringing the concept to life in a way that feels almost awe-inspiring. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve give seriously impressive performances that are basically the cherry on top. To sum up, I can now understand why Backrooms has been one of the major movie events of the year.
BACKROOMS 2026
Imagine describing a dog to someone who's never seen one before and then asking them to draw it. They might get some things right, you know, but there is no way they would get everything right, you know? The devil is in the details.
