Rekord świata Kromowidjojo i Polski Majchrzaka podczas zawodów PŚ w pływaniu
This is going to be a tricky week, perhaps even a week of national depression. As the Olympic torch was extinguished we all felt a wave of sadness roll over us. Team TTS broke down and sobbed through the closing ceremony: some of us from the sadness of the imminent ending, myself from the overwhelming excitement at seeing the Spice Girls reunite.
But what will we do to get over this palable sense of loss? Will we take down the bunting that's been proudly flying since the Diamond Jubilee or will we keep our Union Flags flying? Will we revert back to not talking to randos on the tube, or will the London 2012 spirit live on?
While London could benefit with a few less rando interactions than we've uncharacteristically seen over the past two weeks, how many brilliant ones have there been!? People from ALL nations on tubes, in queues, next to you at Basketball games, with conversations conducted via the official international sign language of the foreign non-English speaking rando. Yet all these disparate conversations have been about one thing: Ennis or Mo or Phelps or Kromowidjojo (ok maybe not about Kromodwidjojo but I relish any opportunity to use her name and she is the fastest woman in water after all.) Over the past two weeks, London has been buzzing. We've cheered on Mo Farah, who while originally a Somalian refugee is now a symbol of being proud and of being British (and of being a legend). "Insane" Bolt has done the MoBot and Mo has done the lightening bolt. We've all endeavoured to do both those moves at every conceivable opportunity, appropriate or not. As a globe we were united and London became the epicenter of global goodwill and multicultural bonhomie.
I, dissimilarly to MS' previous post, have always felt connected to England in a typical British way. I've never had a Christmas without stockings, a tree and a Christmas lunch (ok except the Christmas when my mum thought she'd replace the tree with a "minimalist" tree concept; a bunch of modern looking dry branches with lichen growing on them from which I sullenly hung the decorations) and grew up with long walks up crags, lamb chops and mint sauce. I am also a staunch royalist. In short I've always been proud to be British. But, like MS never has my national pride soared to such peaks. Pride in the fact that we've hosted such a downright fun set of games, pride in Team GB and pride in our nation's rich history which was paid hommage to during the opening and closing ceremonies.
Speaking of which. I enjoyed every minute of the closing ceremony. How dead cool was the pet shop boys' entrance? Take That and the Spice Girls in one night? Damien Hirst’s union jack stage, Russell Brand singing I am the Walrus and all the performers wrapped up in newspaper as if they were fish and chips!!? Artistic director Kim Gavin likened it to "the disco after the wedding" and the Daily Mail called it a celebration of "our confident grubby old world capital". Whatever it was, we want more!!!
But what's the legacy? I, at 28 years old have decided to take up cycling. Everyone I speak to is hitting the gym. Everyone I speak to is proud to be British and proud to be a Londoner. Hopefully we build on the momentum. But whatever happens, in the words of dear old Lord Coe, "When our time came, Britain, we did it right."
Excuse me while I return back to my bed to weep...
