The forests of the Okanogan Complex in the middle of Washington State had suffered greatly during the wildfire. This was far beyond what would constitute a normal blaze, claiming hundreds of trees — some long before their time. Though they had long ago got it well under control, the forest was going to be severely crippled for years to come.
So everyone said. However, one of the enormous bald spots was beginning to show signs of life. Green was blossoming up from the blackened soil at a rate much, much faster than it should have been. It was only visible from the air, and there was rarely air travel in that region enough for it to be noticed.
