This is N682DA getting airborne at Salt Lake City, it's one of 25 Boeing 757-200s at Delta Airlines that do not have winglets out of 91 active Boeing 757-200s in the Delta fleet. ⁣ ⁣ Some of the non-winglet 757s at Delta are used for NBA charters and they often fly shorter hops where the fuel savings of the winglet is negligible. Given that a winglet modification adds weight to the aircraft, the efficiency of winglets on some aircraft are more apparent with longer sectors than short hops. But there are also a number of non-winglet 757s at Delta that aren't part of the charter fleet. Most of those aircraft typically fly shorter routes than the 757s with winglets. ⁣ ⁣ The majority of those 25 757-200s without winglets are older aircraft- all of them are -232s, so they were originally delivered to Delta. This Delta Boeing 767-300ER at Salt Lake City, N181DN, is their second oldest active 767 (N180DN is the oldest active one as of January 2021) having been delivered originally to the airline in August 1992. ⁣ ⁣ Delta was the first US airline to fly 767-300 revenue services on 1 Dec 1986 ATL-MIA. The 767-300s were acquired by the airline for primarily domestic and Caribbean runs but were frequently over time used for trans-Atlantic and Hawaiian services. ⁣ ⁣ In September 1988, Delta ordered the longer-ranged 767-300ER as a replacement for the Lockheed L-1011 Tristars on the trans-Atlantic services as the Tristars were moved to domestic services. ⁣ ⁣ The first 767-300ER revenue flight with Delta was in 1990. The -300ER order was part of an international fleet overhaul with the McDonnell Douglas MD-11s ordered for the trans-Pacific services. You called up the airline and booked a flight over the phone- but if you told the agent on the other end of the line you want to fly from Dallas to anywhere else outside of the Wright Amendment perimeter, they’d apologize and tell you that they don’t fly that route.⁣ ⁣ However, if you wanted to get around the Wright Amendment, the conversation would go something like this:⁣ ⁣ “Yeah, I’d like to book a flight from Dallas Love Field to Baltimore-Washington and I already know about the Wright Amendment restrictions.”⁣ ⁣ “Oh, okay, you must be one of our regulars out of Love Field! So you know already I’ll have to set you up for two separate flights with a change over in an adjacent state then, right?” ⁣ ⁣ We called it the Southwest Shuffle and we did it with a smile!
