“ some people are just born to battle, kp ”
hi! this is in response to your paypal post (i’m using the submission feature since no one ever does anymore haha)
i use it for my writing commissions, and it’s really straightforward. both my clients and i already have paypal accounts, so i usually just email them the price and they wire me the money. you, as the recipient, could also issue an invoice instead (similar to pay/request on venmo, which paypal owns and could be another avenue for your transactions). my money exchanges are based on emails instead of phone numbers or individual paypal accounts, so you could also send invoices to people without paypal accounts and paypal handles it from there. tho iirc, paypal charges a 3% service fee for individuals without an account
hope that helps!

oh thank you so much!! i think i’ll try that first way, it sounds a lot less complicated than setting up an invoice heh :’>
happy birthday, i hope you have many adventures during your next journey around the sun!
Me too. Thank you! :)
So the friend I wrote that freaking essay on Les Amis for just read it. And she sent me six asks in response. AND I AM SO HAPPY AND I HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO SAY AND YAY LES MIS TAAAALK. She said she had unexpected E/R feels. All will fall. :D
So, I've been asked to describe Les Amis basically, and this is what happened. Posting in case my ask reply gets lost. Someday I might make a more coherent post with original content (rather than linking to photosets I've reblogged). If anyone has anything they'd like to correct me on, please do so (nicely). Or discussion. This is a rambling collection of information I've picked up on in my still less than two months in the fandom.
Oh god. You've basically just given me permission to unleash my crazy, so I'm sorry for what you have brought upon yourself. AND HERE I GO. Don't worry about not having seen it that many times and not knowing the names of the barricade boys. The movie certainly doesn't make it clear, I left the first time knowing the names Jean Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Marius, and Cosette. No one else was clear. If it weren't for Tumblr, I doubt I'd be able to know who was who, even after five viewings. My impressions are based on the fandom, the musical, and the bits and pieces I have read of the book (which I will here on out refer to as the brick – as that is the fandom way). So first off, I will help you identify Les Amis (er, barricade boys = Les Amis de l'ABC, or Friends of the ABC, in the brick and the fandom often refers to them as les amis). Gonna stick with the movie faces to make this simpler, too. Okay, so quick references: here, here, and here is a useful powerpoint. Now I'll go one by one (seriously I can't stop myself, plus these little graphics aren't exactly complete – Bahorel is important but not exactly obviously in the movie?). I should also point out that though the movie implies something different, the fandom does NOT include Marius among Les Amis. I'll talk about that later. Oh, and within the fandom everybody is shipped with everybody at some point. There are more common ships, but seriously, they want like a giant barricade boy orgy it's kind of ridiculous. ENJOLRAS (frequently referred to by the fandom, and sometimes in the brick, as Apollo or Orestes – this will be explained later) Oh, Enjolras (here's how you say his name). Played in the movie by the incredible Aaron Tveit, he's the hot blonde in the fancy red coat. He is the leader of Les Amis, the one who is running this attempt at revolution. He's a student, I believe (most of Les Amis are). He's basically a rich young guy, but my impression is that he's not really connected with his family anymore (though he's an only child). His one true love is Lady France, Patria. It's 100% canon that he is fucking GORGEOUS. I'm pretty sure Victor Hugo was in love with his creation. He's describing as being angelically beautiful, but capable of being terrible. He's compared to multiple Greek gods, thus the Apollo thing. Dude's intense and rigid. He doesn't waste his time with wine and women, ever, like I said, Patria is the only one he's swooning over. I think he's got a really good heart, but his cause is freedom for all, and he will fight the individuals for the whole kind of thing? So he is often harsh and cruel, though he's fiercely loyal to his friends. Enjolras has like a magnetic quality to him. He speaks, everyone listens. He's powerful. He's young (and he looks it), but he's old before his time. This is a description of him right out of the brick. It's brilliant at helping to understand, I think. This is a really long post about why Enjolras is awesome, going step by step through the movie. This is a quote from Aaron Tveit, talking about how he played Enjolras (a quote that I think says a lot about understanding him in the movie, and also makes me love Aaron Tveit more – it's a problem). This is another good Enjolras feels post (helps with understanding people in the fandom). This shows you how you should have viewed Red and Black, in case you didn't pick up on it – the comical way the fandom talks about Enjolras, basically. The fandom ships him primarily with Grantaire (dude they're going to get their own chunk of this for me to talk about that ship). Combeferre Known as the guide. Combeferre cares about the cause, he really does, but he's all about logic and learning. He loves education. He'd rather educate the people than have a mass revolution, but it'll take what it takes. The level of this was not something I picked up on from fandom posts...like, fandom does portray him as a bookworm, but the way Victor Hugo describes him (I read the initial descriptions of all of Les Amis) is that he's passionate about everyone being educated and...with the description in the book I fell in love with him. Typically, if someone is going to roll their eyes at the mayhem around them, it's Combeferre (mayhem that we'll get to with everyone else's characters). But he's warm and gentle still. He's the softer side to Enjolras (says so in the brick), and they work well together. They're pretty much BFFs. “Revolution with Combeferre was more breathable than with Enjolras.” Anyway. Yes, he's the guide. He knows his stuff and helps take care of everybody. I'm not clear on it, but I think he's some kind of med student? At least he often is in fics. I'm not sure if he's confirmed wealthy the way Enjolras is, but he's not poor. Portrayed by Killian Donnelly in the film, who has a long history with Les Mis on West End and in the 25th anniversary concert, and is lovely and fabulous. Not consistently shipped with any one person that I've seen, though I like many an AU that put him with Eponine (it always makes sense when they do it). COURFEYRAC Known as the center. He's the heart of Les Amis. According to fandom, in the brick he's pretty much a flirty manwhore, silly, but still, he is the one who keeps everyone together. He's good hearted. He cares about the cause – as they all do (with one big exception later). He can be serious. But my impressions from fandom and fic is that you just wanna give Courf (I don't believe his name is ever shortened in canon but the fandom does all the time) a hug and he's this crazy (and crazy sweet) guy who is obsessed with butts (I have no idea where this started, but it's so prevalent in modern AUs and jokes about him that I feel it's worth mentioning). He's very fashionable. Again, well off financially I think, because the poor can't be fashionable. Student. Played by Fra Fee (WHO HAS THE BEST NAME and he's an adorable precious Irish hobbit omg, and has a varied history in Les Mis on West End as well). The odd thing about him in the movie is that he looks serious all the time (honestly just look at this face), which does not fit with my understanding of his character. I'm wondering if Courfeyrac gets more serious as it gets closer to the barricade in the brick, or if the direction just doesn't make sense. Because Fra is so happy and delightful and more like Courfeyrac than he looks in the movie. Also, a movie only thing (that the fandom likes) is that Courfeyrac kind of takes care of Gavroche. He's the one who's always carrying him around, and he REALLY freaks out when Gavroche dies. Also here's more Courfeyrac. Most often shipped with Jehan, but as he's kind of a known slut he REALLY gets shipped with everybody. (I'll talk more about Courfeyrac/Jehan later too) JEAN PROUVAIRE (but pretty much everybody refers to him as Jehan) Ohhhhh sweet Jehan. He's a poet. He's in love with love. It's strange, reading the description in the first link about him, because within the stuff written by the fandom Jehan blushes like crazy (and my translation of the brick says “blushed for no reason”). And normally has longer hair and he's beautiful and slight and wears ribbons and flowers in his hair, and not a single fuck was given, basically. He's a romantic and delightful and ugh I LOVE JEHAN SO MUCH. I can't even think of what else to say about him at the moment. He's the only son and rich. Sweet little dreamer with his head in the clouds, very kind. Well read. Most often shipped with Courfeyrac. Played by Alistair Brammer, who has been in Les Mis on West End and in the 25th anniversary concert. JOLY JOLYYYYY. I'm in love with multiple of Les Amis, as you may have picked up on by now. Joly is a med student, which has resulted in him being a MAJOR hypochondriac. He's sweet and a little awkward, mostly because OH NO CHOLERA I think. Everyone likes Joly. Played by Hugh Skinner in the movie (and here he is playing a doctor, so, modern AU Joly? But basically his face is why I'm linking this), who has a great face. Seriously, his expressions throughout the movie are amazing. Though he smokes more than I imagine Joly would, I guess in 1832 they weren't so aware of negative effects? He fiercely believes in the revolution and will fight for it, but...no germs, no no no no. He's a joyful man. Best buddies with Bossuet, and shipped with him too. As well as Musichetta (who I guess is never properly in the book, only mentioned, the the fandom has painted a picture of her). OT3 territory, there. LESGLE (L'Aigle and a million other versions but actually mostly Bossuet) Dear Bossuet is horribly unlucky – that is his biggest defining factor. He is also bald, despite being like only 25. Hugo mentions it twice in his introductory description about him. Oddly, he has like more hair than anyone else in the movie. Go figure. And the unlucky thing. Had a good inheritance, lost it. “Possessed learning and wit, but both miscarried.” The brick goes on and on about how terrible his luck is. My favorite bit is, “If he acquired a mistress he rapidly discovered that he also had a new male friend.” I don't know if it's meant to be interpreted as “turns out the lady is a dude” but that's where my mind went. Despite all his bad luck, he's a cheerful fellow. He laughs at himself and moves on. He's played by Stuart Neal, who I don't know much about. As I said above, most commonly shipped with Joly or Joly AND Musichetta. FEUILLY (I recommend looking up how to say his name through Google translator, it's entertaining) I'm a lot more vague on Feuilly. He's an orphan, his country is his parent. He's big on nationality and s he studies history like crazy. Loves France, but is pretty obsessed with Poland. Apparently “the first partition of Poland in 1772 roused him to fury” and it is the event from which he believes “all contemporary social assassinations derive” from. He's a fan maker. He's had to work hard to make his way in the world, but he's done well for himself. He taught himself to read and he continues passionately educating himself and dedicating his life to a free France. Believes everyone should have a country to call home. Played by Gabriel Vick in the movie. People don't talk that much about Feuilly, though he seems like a pretty cool guy. Mostly it's POLAND FANS ORPHAN. BAHOREL As far as the musical goes, he's not in the stage version. So in the movie there's an actor credited as him but it's not like he has any lines, and the fandom has kind of adopted a different background student to be Bahorel, nevermind what imdb says. They say this guy is Bahorel. But anyway, about his character. I think he's the oldest of Les Amis (second being Bossuet), but I'm not sure. “He was a born agitator.” Bold, snarky, brawler, spendthrift. Only thing better than a fight is a rebellion, and better than a rebellion a revolution (paraphrased from the brick here). MARIUS NOT A MEMBER OF LES AMIS. NOPE. NOT. I'm only putting him before Grantaire, because I can't possibly describe Grantaire without going straight into my ship explanations, so I'm saving Grantaire for last. Anyway. Marius. In the movie, he's all awesome and giving speeched with Enjolras and into this revolution – until Cosette, anyway. But you get the impression he and Enjolras have this bromance thing going and just...that is not at all like the brick, which is where more people seem to get their characterization of him from. The movie butched him up, even in the stage version he's a little lamer, more of a wet towel (and I quote the wet towel bit, though I can't remember from who). In the brick, Marius grows up with his grandfather, thinking his father is this crappy guy, but his grandfather makes Marius write him like every day or something and Marius never gets a reply. Then Marius is FINALLY convinced to go see his dad right before he dies, but something happens and he's running late and his dad dies before he gets there. After he dies, Marius finds out that he was actually this really awesome guy and a war hero, but his grandpa threatened his dad to cut off Marius if the dad stayed in Marius's life. So he didn't. Apparently dad replied to all of those letters and grandpa hid them. So that is why Marius leaves his grandfather's, poor kid is pretty messed up now (that gifset shows movie Marius's motives...not so much brick Marius). Marius ends up being pretty good friends with Courfeyrac, often staying with him. He goes to a Les Amis meeting and does NOT get along with Enjolras, because Marius has some hero-worship issues concerning his dad which means he holds on to his politics. So Marius is rambling about Napoleon and Enjolras is just like “STFU NO.” From my understanding. Anyway, when he does go to the barricades, it's only because he thinks he's lost Cosette forever since he's poor now and can't afford to follow her to England, so he's like “meh might as well go die.” I explain all of this because it should help you understand why so much of the fandom is vehemently against calling Marius an Ami. But really, he's a sweet guy. Poor Marius is just an awkward puppy with daddy issues. Other than the REVOLUTIONARY LEADER image in the movie, it's a pretty good picture of him. He doesn't fall for Cosette at once, but he stalks her pretty much for several months. It all sounds creepy nowadays but idk I think it just shows how Marius is super awkward? He's got a lot of hope and idealism and is very naïve. Anyway. That's Marius. Portrayed by Eddie Redmayne, lovely freckled boy (WHO IS 31 IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE HE LOOKS EARLY TWENTIES). GRANTAIRE (also known as R) Grantaire, Grantaire, Grantaire...he is unlike the others. He is technically one of Les Amis, but he is not a believer in the cause. He's a drunk, a cynic, the only certainty is his next bottle or something like that. He makes a POINT of believing in nothing. He's very sarcastic. He's known as R because Victor Hugo liked puns, and Grantaire sounds like grand (capital) r, so...R. He signs stuff with R, because apparently Grantaire also likes puns and thinks it's clever. Apparently he's mentioned in relation to art like once in the brick and the fandom ran without, so he's often portrayed as being an artist – or having once been one before he became an alcoholic. He's definitely smart, but “Scepticism, that dry-rot of the intellect, had left him without a whole thought in this head.” He knows the ins and outs of Paris. The brick describes him as being “astonishingly ugly” but I think 99% of the fandom chooses to ignore that, sometimes to ridiculous extents (supermodel hot). Despite his ugliness he's a womanizer and tries to convince the other guys he's more successful than he is. But drinking and being cynical are his defining factors. He goes to their meetings and hangs out with them and disrupts things, talking about how their plans will never work, the classes will always remain, you can't change anything, you're all gonna die young doing this, etc. They put up with him though because I guess he can be a fun drunk too, and there is camraderie between Grantaire and the other Amis, they are a family. Even skeptics need friends. Enjolras, though, is incredibly cruel to him most of the time. This is key because... Enjolras it pretty much the entire reason he joined in with Les Amis. Half of Grantaire's description in the brick is about his polarity and attraction to Enjolras. The skeptic clings to the believer. It's not Enjolras's ideas, but his character. He's chaste and solid and passionate, and he's everything Grantaire isn't. The brick says things about how some people's names are always preceded by “and” because they are one of a pair, and that Grantaire was one of those, the reverse side of Enjolras. Random bits of the brick that I've read, aside from those desriptions, continue to make it clear to me that Grantaire is completely in love with Enjolras. In the movie, George Blagden did a fabulous job of conveying Grantaire's love for Enjolras, he totally ships it (one part of FIVE posts full of shippy kind of tweets from him). And on that note, the ships... ENJOLRAS/GRANTAIRE (commonly referred to as E/R) I wasn't sure if I shipped them at first, though I could tell what seemed like the majority of the fandom. I'm gonna try to organize my feels on this but it'll be difficult. Most evidence for this ship is from the fact that Grantaire is totally in love with Enjolras. As I stated above, Grantaire is barely introduced without talk of his ardent of Enjolras. However, Enjolras is introduced with no mention of Grantaire. Eponine is not the only one dealing with unrequited love. Again and again, in just the little bits I've read, Grantaire is obviously enamoured. Like, “looking with great sweetness at Enjolras” and such, when Enjolras was just berating him. Enjolras disdains the drunkard and despises the skeptic, but Grantaire still crawls back to him all the time. I'm not gonna lie, it's a problematic ship for that kind of reason alone. Of course, Grantaire is an alcoholic, which is not easily remedied and so though he TRIES to please Enjolras (at one point it's to help run an errand for Les Amis, I think), he messes up and disappoints him instead. Life sucks majorly for Grantaire. He's kind of obvious in his admiration though, he tells Enjolras “I believe in you” when Enjolras says he doesn't believe in anything. Grantaire is there at the barricade (even if he isn't terribly useful in the morning when the action really starts), knowing full well that everybody he loves is going to die for their foolishness (as he believes). As far as the potential for an Enjolras and Grantaire relationship, I think it's pretty much a no effing way thing in canon. So I read a lot of modern Aus (I mean a lot). But I don't think it's a no way because of their dynamic, but the times and the circumstances (and you know, they're dead). There isn't really a lack of passion in their relationship. Their final moments are FANTASTIC though. Let's start with the fact that the last chapter is called Orestes Fasting and Pylades Drunk. If you look up the wikipedia article on Orestes and Pylades, the word “homoerotic” is used at least like three times. Hugo straight up named this chapter – which is all about the deaths of Enjolras and Grantaire – after a pair of men from Greek mythology who many scholars say had a sexual relationship. So basically, what's happening in this chapter: Grantaire was totally passed out drunk throughout the entire battle. Enjolras is the last one standing, he is bravely facing the guardsmen, and Grantaire stumbles in and sees Enjolras, saying “Long live the republic, I am one of them!” then goes to Enjolras and says “Do you permit it?” and Enjolras grabs his hand and smiles and they're killed facing their foes. THEY DIE HOLDING HANDS, Enjolras seeing the skeptic show some faith and and belief, and Grantaire finally feeling approval (and a hand, ooer) from Enjolras. It's honestly probably their happiest possibly ending (SAVE FLUFFY AUS THAT I WILL READ BECAUSE IT MAKES LIFE BETTER). But the deal is...there is some hinting that Enjolras maybe could have kind of did who knows reciprocated Grantaire's feelings. Like I said, there is passion. This post talks really nicely about what I've been rambling about. COURFEYRAC/JEHAN As far as I know, this has no basis in the brick. But it's a very, very popular modern AU ship so I'm gonna mention it. I wasn't really aware of it, but this fic was recommended to me, I read it, and fell head over heels in love. IT IS THE CUTEST FLUFF OMFG, I recommend it to people who don't even care about Les Mis. Anyway. From there, I've noticed a lot of modern AUs putting them together, and they're just really sweet. I feel like they go well together. Jehan is a sweet, blushing poet who loves love, and Courfeyrac is full of life and buoyance and though he's a terrible flirt, he's warm, he's the heart of things, and why wouldn't the lover and the heart work well together? I don't know, Courfeyrac's grand gestures making Jehan blush...I could change my mind on this ship after reading the brick, I don't know, but for now it works gorgeously when written into the fics I read. JOLY/BOSSUET/MUSICHETTA Joly and Musichetta are from the brick. I haven't read much about them, but she's either his girlfriend or the girl he's trying to woo or something like that. And Bossuet is his closest friend. The fandom has taken this and run with it, so they are mostly considered a romantic trio rather than couple. Musichetta – who I believe has no actual dialogue or anything in the brick – is portrayed by fandom as very sweet, lovely, and badass. Like, you don't mess with 'Chetta. COMBEFERRE AND ÉPONINE Again, NO basis in the brick as far as I know. But the fandom appears to have landed here in modern AUs and really like it. It surprised me the first time I read it (I read a ridiculous amount a fic, as you may have picked up on), but the more I thought about it it makes sense. Éponine is typically portrayed as very strong and independent, but also broken. She grew up being abused after a point, basically. Combeferre is very solidly grounded, but also warm and sweet. And I feel like they really complement each other. I dig it. And that's it for ships that I care to talk about! But I feel like there are a couple more people I should briefly explain in more detail before moving on, heh. ÉPONINE So, there are some things the movie doesn't make obvious. She's a pretty complicated character. In the movie, we see that she was treated well as a child, but then clearly things changed sometime after Cosette left. When we see her in 1832, she's poor, starving, working with her parents on cons, and obviously in unrequited love with the ever oblivious Marius. And that's pretty much what we see. Other things: Gavroche> is her little brother, apparently their parents gave him the boot when they lost the inn. In the fandom, she's often represented as being romantically involved with one of her father's gross associates, Montparnasse (young, disgusting, vicious, dangerous)? I'm not sure how it works in the book. I hear she stands up to him at one point, and that was pretty badass. She's pretty fierce. But then, one thing the fandom seems to largely ignore, is that she's got some major problems too. I guess when she takes the bullet for Marius? It's only because she's positive he's gonna die too, and wants to die first. Her motives are generally about her best interest. I'm under the impression she is a little bit unstable? But again, I haven't actually read any excerpts about her from the brick, so this is what I'm picking up from fandom. Generally loved, but not as pathetic or as perfect as she is often portrayed? COSETTE Cosette gets a lot of crap with no good reason. In the movie, she is a little bland...because we barely see anything of her. But her defenders create a pretty fabulous picture of her, she's still the feisty little girl we saw a glimpse of early in the movie – who shook her head with a simple “UM NO” when the Thenardiers were pretending they loved her in front of Valjean. No, she didn't go to the barricades and fight with Marius – and she didn't know that it was happening, either. We can't say she wouldn't have. I just picture her as sweet, sheltered but adventurous, and really just a lovely person. I've read defenses of her (and it's always defenses, she gets so much hate it's sad) that have been awesome and this is just barely anything, but...I think she's a little more confident and outgoing than Marius, she's just spent less time in the world? I lost momentum towards the end here. If you get really curious and want more about these lovely characters, here's a pdf of the brick itself! So far I've only used to the search function so I could read the descriptions of Les Amis and stuff, but, it's useful. And here's a brief if slightly morbid quick look at who they are, too.
So someone told me that they'd LIKE to be part of the Les Mis fandom but don't feel like they can because they haven't seen it enough and don't know the names of the barricade boys. They're fine with me rambling about it because I'm passionate about it. So, um.
I've opened a word document to begin my reply. TIME TO EXPLAIN LES AMIS AND THE LES MIS FANDOM.
