gently shakes hand. you have good taste. hello from my keys to the kingdom tag. (i have a Lot Of Thoughts about the implication of Denizens and the idea that arthur is seeing the whole broken machinery of the universe at its absolute worst, and also the idea that taking on human shapes is not actually the ideal state for denizens and might have made them weirder and more bent out of shape than usual)
hey there!!! gently returns the handshake I'm so glad to find a kttk enjoyer in the wild. Kttk my beloved. I can blame that series for my actual real-life creative writing degree, it spawned the [dangerously fascinated author tone of voice] Lot Of Thoughts I Carry To This Day. the way it crafted its world and characters and themes and plot and ugh. Ugh!!!! Yeah.
Denizens are sooo.... the way arthur is literally dropped into the actual mechanisms of the universe - technically multiverse, if i remember correctly - and like, it slowly drip fed the reality of the situation through each book, experiences specifically the denizen issue personally, and there's just so much going on all the time. it's so - the way Denizens work is Crazy. that their reflective visages is maybe really bad for them is Nuts. That God forcing things to be made in her image is Bad For Them that being human isn't great but being anything else is in many ways worse but it could be equally fine if they weren't forced to mimic something they aren't, augh. Augh! And the way a person's physical form is reflective of their character but also stifles themself inside the box it creates for them... several characters undergo transformation in the series, several characters have transformation as the goal (waves at my girl Suzy TuBerculosis /joke. T. B. TB. yeah. Sorry.), several characters bemoan stagnancy several characters desire deep and profound change its sooooo but also change is scary change is horror. what happens to arthur to leaf to wednesday and really all the morrow days to the old one etc etc is a tragedy. its nuts! its crazy!! all the themes all at once!!! Suzy becoming a piper's child = tragedy in transformation loss in transformation losing yourself your life your whole world vs Suzy at the end; enforced change unwilling change change you can't control vs change you strive for change you architecht the puns write themselves yes but That's Also The Whole!!! Point!!!!!!!!!!! of the series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that and going the killing everything route was bad and maybe God should've thought her problems through a bit better. Alas.
(it's 2:24 am, so I may not be entirely coherent; suffice to say I adore this series and all it's twists and turns and its The Best at showing a world that is The Worst, I love it. I love how deeply fucked up it is and how everyone is trying so hard all the time but every single odd is stacked against them and there's like 30 people playing 5D chess while others are playing checkers and at least one person thinks its mahjong <3. Someone is playing Go. she did it a little too well and.... well... kaput. Kaput! Start over! Just like she wanted the whole time!!!!!! The plot is so intricate and so unavoidable and so if one thing had changed. it's gloriously crafted. I love this series so much)
