When life isn't all that hectic
Day 7.3: Free day
Part 10 of the BSD Rarepair 2020 series
There was a word for the way Akutagawa behaved around them all, if only Kunikida could find it. The way he was awfully, pathetically jumpy when someone touched him, even just to move past him, the way he flinched slightly when anyone raised their voice. Skittish, perhaps.
It reminded Kunikida of Dazai, of how he’d been when he first came to them. Then he began to wonder when exactly the ADA had turned into a halfway house for ex-mafiosos. Surely this wasn’t their real purpose. Yosano laughed when he pointed it out. “You have to admit they’re pretty good in a fight,” she said, eyes still sparkling.
Kunikida frowned. “I guess.”
Dazai and Akutagawa went out together more often than not, and at first Kunikida didn’t think much of it. What was there to think about? They had their history, and they’d worked out a truce around the time Dazai had requested the President to allow Akutagawa into the ADA on a trial basis (with Atsushi nodding enthusiastically in the background and Kyouka’s mouth pursed into a straight line) so really, the entire thing didn’t concern Kunikida in the slightest.
He kept having to repeat that to himself, because Akutagawa looked so blindly stunned when Atsushi suggested he wear lighter clothes that something in Kunikida’s chest tightened briefly.
They were none of them in the ADA very normal people. Dazai had once suggested that Kunikida was the most normal of them all—he’d laughed privately at the idea, because quite frankly the ADA was full of the broken and lost, and Kunikida as much as any of them. They had Yosano’s sordid, sadistic past life, and Dazai’s dark years, and Atsushi’s time in the orphanage.
He still felt uneasy thinking of it like that. Taking care of his family in the absence of his parents hadn’t been a hardship, not really, even if he’d struggled miserably to make ends meet and in the end had failed, failed so badly it still turned his stomach to think about.
He knew that look on Akutagawa’s face, was the point. He’d felt it on his own the first time anyone suggested he buy himself something just to buy himself something. That kind of thing was, as far as Kunikida was concerned, simply not done. He wasn’t Dazai, frivolous and hedonistic, and he wasn’t Atsushi, who loved fine things even if he needed to be pushed into buying them.
Akutagawa acted like buying fine things for himself was in itself a reprehensible act, and Kunikida found that he didn’t like it, because Akutagawa deserved nice things. Everyone deserved nice things, even if Kunikida didn’t agree with their definitions of nice.
Everyone except Kunikida. Because that was a double-standard that totally made sense—
Kunikida was not a good liar at the best of times, and worse when it came to himself.
“I’ll take you,” Kunikida sighed, pushing his glasses up his nose. Akutagawa blinked up at him.
“Take me where—?”
“To buy clothes. Atsushi is right, you need a new wardrobe. I just don’t trust the rest of them to respect what you’d want to wear.”
Akutagawa looked pleasantly surprised. “And you do?”
“I trust you to know, which is really the best you can hope for. Now—” He pulled out his diary, running his finger down the schedule for the rest of the week. “How does Thursday sound to you?”
