Story summary: Experience the series at Kurama's side. Mayumi comes from a long line of demon hunters but that doesn't stop her from befriending and eventually dating our favorite fox demon, Kurama. Eventually, she gets swept up in his adventure with Yusuke, Kuawabara, Hiei, and the rest of the crew.

Chapter 3: After the Shadow Sword

Mayumi has noticed Kurama acting weird again today. Every now and then he would wince and more than once she had caught him holding his stomach. He had promised to take her to see his mother after school so she figured she would ask him on the way there. Maybe it was just a stomach ache, his body catching up to him from all the stress he’s been through these past few days. But something told Mayumi it was more than that.

The two were walking in comfortable silence when Mayumi knew it was time to strike. She pretended to lose her footing, quickly bumping into him as they walked. This caused Kurama to wince.

Chapter 2: The Night After the Forlorn Hope

As soon as Mayumi got home, she ran up to her room to cry. Her parents, concerned, asked what was wrong and she just said that she was going through something with a friend and they left it at that. What could she tell them? That her best friend who’s actually a demon is going to die to the recently stolen Forlorn Hope to save his human mom? They would flip out due to more than one reason. So instead, she took to her room and cried alone, mourning the would-be loss of her friend.

However, they were more than friends now, right? They just got their true feelings out in the open. And it was too late. Mayumi knew it was Kurama’s way of saying goodbye, of leaving her with one last bit of knowledge about it, but she secretly resented him for it. Why couldn’t he have said something sooner? Or just not at all? She guessed he didn’t want to leave things unknown between them.

She didn’t even bother to change out of her uniform as night came and the tears only came harder as she saw the full moon rising. He was gone, or he was going to be leaving soon.

I’ve been meaning to write an OC insert into the Yu Yu Hakusho anime for years now and I finally got around to it! A reader version is coming shortly.

Chapter 1: Before the Forlorn Hope

Kurama has been acting differently today. He has had this sad and faraway look all morning. Mayumi was concerned. Every time she looked over at him, trying to get some eye contact, his eyes were always looking dead ahead. She wondered if he was even looking at the board.

Lunchtime finally came around and Mayumi was at his side in an instant.

“Shuichi, what’s wrong?” she asked, using his human name. “You’ve been acting strange all day. Stranger than usual.”

A Promise Made (Reader Version)

This is the reader version to my original OC version. Enjoy!

Story summary: Shortly before Kurama's fight with Karasu, Karasu catches up to you and Kurama attempting to intimidate you two. For you, it becomes too much.

The original OC version is also available.

You held your tough exterior at least until Karasu was out of sight. When he was, you let out a quiet sob, focusing on the ground. Kurama had heard it and turned to you, attempting to place a hand on your arm.

“Hey, are you alright?” he asked but you didn’t answer. Instead, you turned and ran for the exit, hiding your face as you did so.

You shouldn’t have joined him to watch the match. It only made you sick to your stomach to see all five members of that team killed so easily. And Kurama seemed determined to fight Karasu who so easily defeated his opponent and snuck up on Kurama just now, close enough to touch him. Not many things scared you but this upcoming match did.

You didn’t stop running once you were outside and instead ran to the treeline. Once you felt like you had run enough, you stopped, leaning against a tree.

Recently got back into Yu Yu Hakusho and I dug up this piece I wrote years ago!

representation in fic

to balance the bad with some good, i got a comment on my long kurama/oc story that is probably the best comment i will ever get

so my main character, Rei, has alopecia, right? hair loss is common in my family and i’ve had trouble with it in the past, so my main character has some of my hang-ups regarding hair, personal appearance, and how all of that interacts with being AFAB. Rei’s struggles come from a very personal place and i was mostly writing those elements into the story for myself

BUT i just got a comment from someone who also struggles with hair loss, albeit for different reasons, and they mentioned how they can personally relate to Rei as a result...and i don’t think i’ll ever get a better comment than that

diversity and representation are important. even if it’s just that one, single commenter who feels seen because of Rei and her struggles, that validates every last bit of time and energy I’ve put into writing The Sight Unseen

bless that commenter. may you see only healing ahead.
