on a purely technical level, a big thing i despise about AI-generated writing is how fucking try-hard it sounds...these slop-fics/books make every single line into try-hard almost-poetry that is absolutely exhausting to read

sometimes a character just needs to do something. it doesn't have to sound pretty. every line shouldn't have to force a metaphor or try to out-do the one that came before. many lines of prose can (and should!) be mundane/bland so that the poetic ones that come later stand out all the more. AI-generated writing doesn't understand that prose, like music, can make use of dynamics. if all the music is loud, then none of it's loud. if all the lines are poetic, then none of them are.

also the chronic over-focus on emotions without actually saying anything concrete about what the POV character is experiencing oh my fucking god if i see one more of these goddamn fics come across my dash i'll scoop my eyes out with a melonballer

As a society, we need to go back to understanding that strangers on the internet are, you know, strangers. I feel lately that I'm seeing a rise in 'An author I love blocked me because they took my comment the wrong way' posts on the ao3 subreddit, and then the comment is them calling the author a fucking bitch or something like that.

Don't do this. Tone doesn't translate well in text, and if you don't have a rapport with that author, they are not going to interpret, 'You're a fucking bitch' as, 'Author I hate you for being so talented and making me feel so keenly.' They're going to interpret it as you being an asshole. You can shit talk with your friends because you have an established relationship with them and can distinguish between playful banter and genuine anger. You do not have this with a stranger, no matter how much you like their fics. You will have a much more pleasant time in fandom and not get cockblocked from interacting with your favorite writers if you remember this.

as someone who studies linguistics, i will never not laugh when someone says “that word doesn’t exist” like, my good bitch. if a word is regularly used by a certain amount of people then it exists. if it has its own grammatical rules then its perfectly valid. it’s part of their lexicon now, sweetie. “It’s a made up word” honey, all words are made up. Linguists didn’t just fucking excavate athens and were like BEHOLD!!! VOCABULARY!! “that word isn’t in the dictionary” dictionaries are not rule books, they’re record books. “Refrigerate” didn’t exist 200 years ago and yet here we are. a language that doesn’t adapt to an ever changing society is bound to be lost because, eventually, it won’t be able to keep up with social progress. you motherfuckers.

yes, my pain is manageable again! i think 7 weeks of consistent chapters was just hard on my body. having to sit at the keyboard each day for longer than usual added up. taking a week off was helpful, and my pain is a lot better now.

i'm going to invest in a new desk, soon. my current desk is really tall. it's hard to get comfortable and have enough support for my shoulders/elbows while writing. i think a new desk (specifically a standing desk) will help a lot. i don't experience the same type of pain when i use my standing desk at the office, so i think my at-home posture is exacerbating my physical issues.
