New Language Adventure - Kurdish!
In the tradition of me learning languages and then learning the languages that those languages are making disappear, I have decided to learn Kurdish. I’m not really sure why - my reasons get worse and worse with each passing day, this one was really just on a whim. If I have to blame it on anyone, it’s Txarango, but like everything, it’s a complicated story. Anyhow, I decided to learn it, and it’s turning out to be pretty interesting.
The most interesting part of my experience is not the language itself (at least not yet; I’m not that far in), but rather the way that I’m learning. I found a list of YouTube videos that are Kurdish lessons, and the best thing about them is that they’re all in Kurdish. No English, no other languages to mess up the accent or the words the people use, just plain Kurdish.
I had a similar experience with Catalan, learning it only through real-world materials like TV shows and songs, but I was able to do that because I already spoke a Romance language and so the grammar was much easier. I haven’t yet tried it with a completely different language - I’ve always had some sort of structure. I’m interested to see how this will come out, because if it works, it’s definitely the best way to learn. As of now, the lessons are lots of fun. We’ll see what happens, but it’s certainly a new adventure.
