I complained about this not being in the game, so I took it upon myself to make it. If a wiki gets started, feel free to use this image for it. You can see from the image I have yet to find a use for the Mantis and Marauder souls. I also have yet to enter the Arid, Ivory, Noxious, Umbral and Rusted gates. I wrote down the riddles for these gates; some of them sound like I should try using duplicates but I'm not sure.

Arid Gate (Mount Anvil) Entry is reserved for the bravest of souls. Ivory Gate (Mount Anvil) Show that you aim ever higher. Noxious Gate (Knavewood) The serpent slays with subtle strikes. No other is welcome here. Umbral Gate (Bracewind) Make a offering of perfection to Lord Magister Josiah. Rusted Gate (Whetners/Northslide Foothills) There is no sting worse than that of Zosark. Prove you can endure it.

There's some other stuff that's forgeable, like staves with jewels. You can also forge two identical obsidian pieces into a part of a statue, the whole of which is used for a puzzle in Bracewind.

and now it's time for a... 90% point review, i guess. there's certainly an implication that i'm not Done yet, but i'm willing to throw my hands up and say "welp, fuck it" for anything i missed. i was playing on v1.05 for this; i was unable to update at the time.

map travel isnt as bad as i claimed it was. the piece moves p fast and the way the map is it's easy to click a space across the map to get close to everything else on that side. HOWEVER. i often might accidentally click a location when aiming for things like the party/save/enter location buttons. there are even times when i'll somehow change locations and enter the changed location at the same time,,.

i updated the image of the magic veins in the previous post; really, all i did was rotate it. to explain, i had the veins organized so that the two veins most opposite of the one you were looking at would be the ones it is both strong and weak against (depending on if you're looking at alignments vs manas). as it turns out, the fundaments shrine ALREADY has them organized this way, so i edited my image to be in the same order that they appear as in the shrine.

i was also hard on the magic system. i didnt voice how much i appreciated the CONCEPT. the align/mana division was really cool to read, the whole damn thing was cool to read--the entire explanation had me engrossed.  i still dont bother trying too hard with the curses/boons (i dont even,, know if theyre proccable outside of an item specifically saying something like TangleStrike), but im more interested in using proper align/mana against enemies. sort of.

fusing gems with staves is bullshit though lmao like you can't even use the lenses--which only have Mana properties--it has to be a pure gem which has both Align and Strike properties just to give your staff a Mana property. That doesn't even make sense; it's literally backwards. The rings make more sense as they give the same properties and the Mana one, yet the Mana property is excessive (though I can see it's use from a balance perspective).

this is less about bastard bonds and more about games in general, but i don't like puzzles that are completed by finding an item in later maps. that's something that happens A LOT in games, where the only thing that's really stopping your progress is the fact that you haven't progressed in the story enough. bastard bonds does a decent job of showcasing other puzzles: like the 9 pieces of rope i need (which is arguably both the same issue and almost not), or one where i just had to bring a warhammer from one side of the map to the other. those aren't very far removed from the same issue, though, and i'd hardly call "make sure you check every chest" a "puzzle." (not trying to shit on BB for this because this is... an old trope, i guess, i'm just commenting on it.) some of its dungeons mimic the same initial problem, where it has you go down two different paths to, say, pull two switches, and then the main path opens. again that happens a lot in video games,, obviously we want to make sure we actually do things in the right order,,, and there's only so many ways to design a dungeon so limiting options is unfavorable. but it still feels silly,, JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

out of all of those examples though, the warhammer one was a good one--i want to stress that. the mansion with the dark ruby was kind of similar. it might not be PERFECT, but having the map interact with itself is fun,, we'll just say it's a step in the right direction but not quite there. it's also weird that i'm criticizing all of this, because there are DEFINITELY several maps with doors locked shut that i don't understand at all lmao. these ones probably have Actual Puzzles and i can't even see them??? or maybe it's the same issue and they're just locking me out for no reason. no idea!!! it makes me pissy that there are actual maps that simply exist to not be secured, as securing a map is pretty much the only way to know it's cleared of events.

but it's funny how i say all this, and my least favorite maps are the tracts.

more lamenting monster recruitment: lots of effort, not much reward for it. they dont have the same emotional depth the human characters do. though i HAVE noticed that monsters are generally stronger than having human counterparts. at least it seemed that way to me; if you've felt differently you should let me know or make a post of your own, let your voice be heard etc etc. even if they arent stronger in combat, they're definitely way better for manpower. most of the time they're recruited as neutral units which have the BEST manpower scaling. perhaps the recruitment difficulty surrounding them is based on the fact that they're more an end-game bandmate goal? if thats the case, that kinda sucks, because it means that monster bandmates are basically just there for powercreep. again, i'm still glad it's possible in the game at all, but these are the breaks. i should also note that i dont have mindspeak yet (which btw feels IMPOSSIBLE to get), so i'm still unable to recruit the completely unintelligent creatures (I think, anyway... I still get the "the creature doesnt understand you" negotiation results on things like the gargoyle-esque buds but I've also recruited animals like a diretiger and the... anorach?? giant bull thing). if this is all true, then THOSE monsters are probably innately The Best.

the incident i mentioned before with Nazar responding to his late lover's journal was good. and i understand that that is one of those moments where having your bandmates trusting you gives you the special events in the map. all of that is nice and good, but that happened to me completely by coincidence. ive reset and levelled several bandmates, but it seems they'll only bother to trust me if i keep them in my party for an extended period of time. it's not necessarily long enough to be frustrating, but it is out of the way enough when im focusing on keeping a decently powered party while increasing my manpower. and then the reward for doing that is using specific characters (out of the dozens of main characters) in specific locations (basically guesswork; i would've never connected nazar to that journal i had found if he hadn't spoken when he did) for an event.

again with nazar, the only reason he even trusted me at that point is because he was my jailbreak companion. i dont even meet rosaline until the far right side of the map, but she can also help you escape. does this mean i missed some possible locations she would've responded to? am i supposed to retrace my steps or make a new file and explore with her and a new main party?? should i just be making unique parties for a bunch of different save files? but if the same people are always at the start and end of the game, im going always have the same starting party more or less, so the only logical thing to do is retrace my steps. with every single major character.

and then, keeping all this in mind, i just get more infuriated at how useless my monsters are in regards to storytelling. there's absolutely no point in having them in my party when i could have someone who could be reacting to the environment. so now, in retrospect, i just feel stupid for even bringing monsters along. am i being kinkshamed right now??
